Guest [Anonymous]
I want "MORE PSYCHEDELIC" not "less psychedelic"! i don't like the trend of taking the "psy" out of PSYTRANCE, as many labels seem to be doing these days. Respect goes to Twisted, for being psychedelic, tho I haven't heard this release.
Guest Psylent Buddhi
It sure is! And no, mp3s are not the basis of my review! I have it on cd, which I bought legally from my local record-pusher. Btw, I forgot to mention in my review that the Younger Brother track is good too, although it could have been longer! Guest Psylent Buddhi
V/A - Backroom Beats Artist: Various Title: Backroom Beats Label: Twisted Date: 2001 Track listing: 01. 04'13" Younger Brother : The Receptive (Jacuzzi Mix) 02. 07'27" Ott : Somersettler 03. 06'34" Contraband : Who Killed Franklin (Texas Chainsaw Massacre Mix) 04. 07'27" Doof : Yesterdays Future (Underwolves Rmx) 05. 06'42" Citizen Kaned : Lost In Bass 06. 07'20" Event Horizon : Endless Ocean 07. 07'00" Digital Mystery Tour : The Blooming 08. 07'34" Esionjim : Purple 09. 07'49" Doof : Star Over Parvati (Orchestral World Groove Rmx) 10. 07'47" Hierophant : Easy Glyder 11. 07'49" Stuph : Venice Beach Dub Review: As soon as I read about this release on the Twisted website some time ago, I've been looking forward to this release. And as always when it's coming from Twisted, it's high quality stuff (Twisted has, like the they did with the Doof album, turned to Abbey Road Studios to handle the mastering)! Please note though that this compilation contains some tracks that are definitely less psychedelic than anything else we've heard from Twisted so far. It could seem as if Twisted is trying to reach a new audience. And granted, this compilation certainly has a lot of different types of chill-out to offer, from the humorous and loungy "Who Killed Franklin" to Hierophant's and Stuph's regular chill-out tracks stripped for any psychedelic extravaganza. But having said that, there are still some nice examples of psychedelic chill-out/downbeat. For instance Ott's reggae/dub-like "Somersettler", which has unmistakable signs of Simon Posford all over it, the great remix of Doof's "Yesterdays Future" and finally Esionjim's "Purple", one of the highlights of this compilation, which sounds like a blend between slow psytrance and downbeat. If you, like me can appreciate the less psychedelic chill-out stuff (that also exists), then this compilation is not one to miss. I for one think this is a great compilation. But if you like your chill-out served ultra-psychedelic then skip this release and wait for the new Shpongle instead!
Guest iNFiNiTi500
The Star ensemble of the Twisted camp crafted a chilled "Demented" and its a real test of nerves / ears since it begs to differ. Contraband's horny acid jazz contribution including saxophone solo may indeed be a bit overboard for the average psytrancer and the same applies to the techno blues of Hierophant but the remaining tracks are splendid examples of less alienating ambient tracks. Younger Brother(Simon and Benji) deliver a nice Celtic Cross clone with beatiful French vocals. OTT let the sun shine with a very slow dub/reggae track including a very deep bass. The 2 Doof remixes add some extra atmosphere to the somewhat empty originals. The Citizen Kaned(Doof and Benji)track is more psychedelic bass laden dub. Event Horizon(Tristan and John Mark)created a nice melodic track with female vocals. Digital Mystery Tour(Steph from Total Eclipse)has to be the psychedelic highlight here, very convincing deep ambient track. Esionjim's track could easily be included on the Eclipse compil, very nice dub again. Stuph has by far the most melodic contribution here and what an optimistic stomper it is, with its bone chilling harmonica solo. Backroom beats definately is definately evidence that TWISTED's idea of the Psytrance future is Beats with Etnic influences and acoustic instruments. Can't complain 8.5/
Guest JSB
Twisted records are going more and more accessible theses days. Maybe it's the new Simon's direction. Some tracks on this compilation are excellen, others are poor. One thing is sure, we are far from the "Eclipse" compilation in quality and psychedelism. But i think it was in the twisted plans to make this compilation more accessible. I hope that more psychedelic/tribal compilations will be released again in a near futur... Guest Kindgok
I like this disc, with the exception of the lame MC who on one track (I forget which one) says something corny like, "You gotta get down with my sound, yeah yeah..." -kingdok

mahoney
This is great and wonderful chill-music. I just wanted to give you a tip if you like this: "Summer Night Sessions" compiled by Michael Dog. This is pure "relax in the summer night" music! Guest santtu
excellent. track 9 sucks, rest is great. if you like this, also peace orchestra's (1/2 tosca)album from g-stone is brilliant ;-
Guest smokeBuddha
Haven't heard this yet, but I agree wth santtu that peace orchestra's album is very good. In fact, just about anything involving Peter Kruder or Richard Dorfmeister is awesome. Tosca's 'Suzuki' album is incredible.
Guest Diepeveen
Very nice release from twisted... Guest bring_back_the_old[at]twisted.co
Okay here were are again with Twisteds new direction. Gone are the mad days of Twisted being the number one psychadelic funksters as they slowly devolve into some kind of post club candy shop. Stick your glow sticks and pacifiers were they don't fit people
Guest MG
One of my favourite CD's of all time in my opinion, and I am awaiting the sequel. I am patricularly partial to Citizen Kaned, Digital Mystery Tour & find track 3 annoying. Get this CD at all costs.
