Guest Tomvcarter
Haldolium - Be Real Artist: Haldolium Title: Be Real Label: Nova Media Date: 2002 Track listing: 01. Be Real 02. In The Wind 03. Feel 04. Serial 05. 2nd Movement 06. The Journey 07. Being Boiled 08. X-Brass 09. B/W Review: A little dissapointing from haldolium after releasing two of the best prog/psy albums ever imo. The tunes are all very good, but have been ruined with the use of shitty vocal elements over the top. "Be Real" the first tune is very good driving bass with a good groove to it and exelent precussion, which builds to a great stomp towards the end, but after that the album deteriorates. "in the Wind" and "feel" are both very good progressive tunes with fat groovy basslines and wicked stabs & hi hats, but the vocals sound a bit like Moby or underworld, and turn what would be two very good tunes into something a bit tacky. If the vocals were to be replaced with a noise they would be amazing. Sadly the rest of the album does not get any better. the "be real" tune is worth getting but avoid the rest. You may like this if you enjoyed the emou single this summer, but it is nowhere near as good imo. 5/
Jalliuz
Indeed... i also expected more from it. I like their older stuff very much but I don't get the same feeling when i hear this. It's like they took a little step backward. The production is better i must say. It overcomes many artists when they get more and more in music that they try more difficult things what is not allways better. And then you get something like this... Or they want to release a new cd too fast (don't know if that was the case here). That is just my opinion. I hope for Haldolium that others love it cuz I really like Haldolium!!! But if you ever can see them 'live' it's really a must! Very very very good live dance music. Gets everybody in it.
Guest Slave2rave
I don't know about you, but i found Track 5 (2nd Movement) a pure jewel! That melody that goes along with the music must be a killer at the dancefloor. Very atmospheric (i love atmospheric tracks!). Track 1, Be Real, is the strongest track, by far. The producing is great, and the sample isn't something simply thrown, but a part of the music. Very nice. Tracks 2, 3 and 4 didn't make the effect i expected. Actually, track 2 is very bad (those samples ruined it), but track 3 is ok. Track 6 begins with some tribalistic beats, but then the samples ruin it again. Some eurohouse kind of samples. Yack! Looks like Eiffel 65 - Blue. :/ The music is nice, but the samples really don't go well with it. Track 7, Being Boiled. Again, very nice music, excellent engineering, but it's almost psytrance with lyrics. Uhm, not the kind of thing that i like. Track 8, X-Brass, begins with a simple but nice beat, and some kind of saxophone sound. Very very good, i love this kind of experiment and instrument mixing, specially when it's done that well. A highlight, for sure. Last track is more ambient, Haldolium in a lower pace . Well, i didn't like it that much. Maybe it's gonna grow on me, but who knows. Maybe not. Average track, by now. Well, the album, as a whole, lacks a bit of consistency. It has incredibly high points, but some very low ones to compensate. Can't say it's not well produced: the sound quality is awesome. But the samples somewhat didn't make the effect they were probably trying to reach. Or they did, and i still can't notice it. 7/10, because of the three awesome tracks (1, 5 and 8). Guest Koirraaah
Horrible! Just horrible! I love the earlier Haldolium albums but this... not what I expected, to say the least. Yuck. 1/10.
Guest Tomvcarter
A complete change of heart since i first reviewed this album. I hated it at first, but now have totally changed my mind. Its not all good, but when it is its awsome! Track 1 "Be real" i have always loved and still do, a classic, one of the best tunes they have writen. Track 2 is weak as the vocals here just dont work. But track 3 "Feel" is an absolut gem. It does hav a few vocal loops in it, but they work so well. With a huge break after about 3 mins, it kicks back in in a typically haldolium style, pure thick bass, perfect hi hats, and dark haldolium growls here and there! 9/10. track 4 is a good track, but nothing special. 5 is another gem and i totally agree with "Slave2rave" very, very good! 6, 7, & 8 are all pretty average. But it ends in style with a beutiful euphoric downbeat track, very nice melody. It does have its low points, but i think its just due to experimentation, as when it works it is some of the best progressive trance i have ever heard. The production is blinding, and it is the most innovative stuff i have seen for a while, takeing trance into a totally new area. It reminds me of some of the tunes element have released, very German! Buy it just for the good tunes but keep an open mind, i love it! because it is sooo good at some points, 8/
