This was released back in August '01, and I think it deserves a review on our pages. Not because it is a particular good comp, but simply because it's a retrospective look at the trance-history. Actually, this is the German counter-move to the Israeli compilation RETRO. Only, RETRO was A LOT better than this. The 3 CDs are split in genres: CD1 is pure goa, CD2 is progressive minimal and CD3 is ambient chill-out. I don't wanna describe all the tracks as all of them are released (duh!?) but I will briefly write my highlights of each CD. CD1 starts out with a couple of old tracks from '95 and I don't really dig on them. Then an annoying Ololiuqui-track and a mediocre Etnica track. And then the 3 best tracks on CD1: Space Tribe, S.S.O. & S.U.N. Project. Oldies, but goodies. Nice! CD2 starts with a forgettable Martian track, but then there's the amazing Spirallianz-track One Way Ltd. Very nice. I also like the SBK & Necton tracks. Also Zorba is nice. The Spacefish track is too boring at first for my taste, but slowly gets better. Sangeet's track is also good, though too heavy at times. Heavy is fine, if you do it in a sophisticated way like The Delta or Spirallianz. The only track I don't really like on CD2 is the last one by Fuenf D. Conclusion: CD2 is quite good, but only has one killer: One Way Ltd. Finally, there's the ambient/downbeat CD. There's 2 really good tracks on CD3: Etnica : Funkadelia and Alien Mutation : I Had A Hallucination .. The Ololiuqui track is pretty good too. The rest are too boring.. I like the idea of a label celebrating their 100th release, but I don't really agree on all the tracks that DJ Antaro have selected here. Actually, the good tracks on this comp could fit on one CD instead of 3. Good things: Nice cover-notes with pix and info on most of the artist featured on this comp. Bad things: There are only 5 killers on this CD, the rest is forgettable. Also, the selection of tracks seem a bit random at times. If you really love Spirit Zone, but haven't got much of their back-catalogue then get this - if not, don't! Rating 6/
Guest kadafi
Well... I got this one purely by coincidence actually, I gathered all old EU money I could find and brought it to a local cdstore, and got their only 2 psychedelic comps in return :-) This is Spirit zones nr 100 release in 7 years... It's surely NOT "The best of them" imo, but each dc contains at least 2 good tracks....CD1 PSYTRANCE: oldskoolers will like it of course, for me it's good but mostly to déjà-vu and predictable..except for...Etnicas artwork #4, not my favorite on 'Equator' but still very good here! #5 has a good build up, starts minimalistic, gets more and more atmosphere and melodies towards the end. not-bad-ones are #2 and #7. Elektric Universe #8 sounds stupid at home but I'm sure it would work on the dancefloor. The Shiva Chandra track #9 isn't good at all, ugly samples.....CD2 PROTRANCE: Not a must have either, though Spirallians blast your head off with #2: a dark, hard & powerfull kickbass with very interesting structures... minimal art gets 10/10! #7 is less storming, but has a very nice kickbass and a pure tribal sound filled with psychedelic samples. #4&5 are good but nothing more.....CD3 AMBIENT has various musical influences and some have singings. Favorites are: #4. Etnica leads you to the world of fishes with this bassline and waterlike sounds, beautiful! #2 is a piece of art to with its good build up, nice sounds and I actually like those lyrics... #8 isn't bad eiter. All in all, I don't advise this comp to anyone, cause I skip a lot of tracks on each one of these 3 cd's... 6,5/
Guest kzi
there's no way this is the best of spirit zone... they can do much better
Guest Mescalinium
I think Spirit Zone has succeeded very well in conveying the essence of their label: prolific, and ultimately mediocre. The few highlights to be found here are easily picked up elsewhere. At best, this is musically inessential, collection fodder only.
Guest Tomvcarter
This is definatly not the best of spirit zone, dont bother to buy this, go and get some other spiritzone stuff, Necton, or the X-Dream album which is due out any day now! I only give this 4/
psyfi
This is definitely not the best of spirit zone's releases, they could really do much better - at least on the psychedelic cd! but nevertheless it is worth buying this cd as it gives a good overview over spirit zone's history and the booklet contains lots of info and nice pics, too. cd 1: the first 2 tracks sound old but i like them nevertheless. the ololiuqui track is ok but they have waaaaay better tracks. the etnica track kicks ass, maybe the best track on the first cd imo. but tarsis is also very good. space tribe, sso, sun project and shiva chandra deliver some decent tracks here. cd 2: well i have never been much of a progressive fan but this cd surprised me positively. the first track is nothing special but i still like it. i can't understand what dp said about track 2, i don't like it very much, no diversity but the bells sound nice. sbk - "mitleids express" is somewhat dark with a wicked sample of a baby crying "komm' zurück" (come back). this is one of the best tracks on cd 2 - if not the best!! necton also adds quite a delicate track to this comp. "beverly hills cop" is really good! zorba is a side project of gms and their track sounds like all gms tracks, too - not very innovative. (please don't flame me for this statement:) in spacefish's warm streams you can really hear those "streams" but besides that there's nothing special about it, it gets boring after some time. i can't stand sangeet's music and "defolder" is no exception, so i won't even write about this track! the last track on cd 2 is fünf d with "woody". in opposition to dp i find this track very good, actually this track caused me to buy their album. second best track together with necton to me. cd 3: here comes some tasty chill out/downbeat. warning: i'm not good at describing ambient, so i will just write which tracks i like and which don't patchwork - ka is good track with oriental influence. the next track is just an average le mar track, yet not bad. caravan o solé i a very nice track with lots of drums (bongos?) and other instruments and a female voice singing in an strange, aboriginal language. there's been a lot of controversial talk about etnica's downtempo tracks on "equator". i think you have to decide for yourself if you like the style or not - i do! ololiuqui - backline is an ok track, maybe still the best track from their second album "valves". "table mountain" is very atmospheric with airy (not eery!) sounds in it but gets a bit boring after some time. the electric universe track is nothing special. the last track is very nice and chilly again. as i said before, these are not the best tracks spirit zone can deliver but all in all this package gives you a nice historical overview and good info.
