Guest Stormbringer
Empirion - BETA / Ciao Artist: Empirion Title: BETA / Ciao Label: XL Date: 1997 Track listing: 01. 10'35" BETA (Original Mix) 02. 07'00" Ciao (Ciao Mix) Review: What happened to Empirion? This is the latest release I´ve found with them, and the b-side, "Ciao" (Ciao Mix) 10/10, is truly awesome. They were so very much ahead of their time when releasing this crossover between psytrance, techno and ebm. The combination of the three styles works excellent! Typical psytrancenoises and a monotonous beat mixed with an ebm-like melodyline sounds great together. On top of that there´s some nice techno percussions and some voicesamples. This isn´t Empirions most psychedelic track but I think it should be in the Goatrance.free-database anyway. They had a big psytrancehit with another (cheesier) song, "Narcotic Influence", that some of you might have heard? The a-side, "B.E.T.A." (Original Mix) (3/10), isn´t much to talk about. It´s pretty soft, cheesy and also quite boring because it sounds very repetive like the record would have a scratch! This is one of the very first psytrancerecords I bought and I still think it rocks!
Guest AtomicCow
Yeah...I don't think this qualifies as psy trance either. It's a good techno record (so was Narcotic Influence) but it's not psy trance.
Guest Stormbringer
Ha ha! The difference between psy and techno these days is so small that if you want to draw a line you´ll have to call a surgeon :-D And even if you did that you still wouldn´t get rid of all the techno ;-) It would really be a bloddy mess if you tried something like that ;- I reviewed this record because it´s a very early crossover record between different styles, something I think is really interesting and important historicly. When this record was released most psytrance were glossy, melodic stuff. The sound of this release is a mix between genres as most releases are today. It isn´t 100% psy but NOT 0% either. This discusssion may continue when Children uses my Juno Reactor "Pistolero" review (if he does?) because it´s the same thing with that 12". It´s borderland trance too but in another direction. Guest Epic Automata
The Empirion album (Advanced Technology - which contains these songs) was pretty much my first experience in aggressive four-on-the-floor (along with some System 7 stuff). I got a lot of enjoyment out of it and I wish they'd put out something new, because it'll probably be a lot better than their first effort. I do, however, agree that it does not belong on this site. Guest Stormbringer
A year ago I heard rumours about a new label, ATOMIC REACTOR, and the first release was scheduled to be KLOQ aka Empirion "What you are/Blade". I´ve been searching for it but I haven´t found it, and I don´t really know if it exists. If anybody knows anything about this release, please let me know!!! Guest akroupnik[at]hotmail[dot]com
This is excellent stuff, especially considering the time of its release. BETA. is a nice track, while it can not be really regarded as goa trance, it a good melodic tech-trance with a nasty edge, an excellent set starter. Ciao is more psychedelic and a bit more monotonous, but is a good, driving track. Overall excellent stuff. Interesting fact, their song Narcotic Influence was actually a big radio hit here in Australia on the time of its release (about 4 yrs ago i think) and was also included on the Hackers soundtrack with their remix of Prodigy-Firestarter which i havent heard yet. -Madpup-
