Insejn
V/A - Chiller Waves Artist: Various Title: Chiller Waves Label: AP Date: 2002 Track listing: 01. Chi-ad : Sandestin 02. Zerotonine : Lunatic 03. Sonic Fusion : Heartbeats 04. Void : Chemical (Fingertwister Rmx) 05. Solar Fields : Blue Moon Station 06. Analog Pussy : Rug-C 07. Asura : Lost Eden 08. Fingertwister : Black Spot 09. Aztech : Mumine 10. Eargear : Slowsneekers/b> 11. Trancefeld : Darkside (Outro) Review: Compared to Module 1 this is a little more "gogo". It's faster and more variations. Even if it's chillout some tracks has a steady beat. I don't like that at all. The Analog Pussy track is just awful. Solar Fields do their job and Trancefeld delivers a very dark track. The suprise here is the Sonic Fusion track. Very spaced out sounds with werid percussions. Good job. Final Verdict: 6/
Guest 1400Miles
More chillout madness this time on the Analog Pussy label accompanied by a superb sleeve. The subtitle 'State of the Art Ambient Beats' kinda gives an indication what to expect as variation/experimentation is king here. CHi-AD opens with an atmospheric dark mood, its definately good but I prefer the more structured 'When the effect came' on Fahrenheit II but this simply is another kinda track. Zerotonine follows with a great energetic track with a subtle climax. Sonic Fusion brings some funky flowing track, really nice. Void is more experimental starting of with a prodigy beat slowly morphing into some distorted bass which subseqently is taken over by some tasty space synths. Hardly downbeat but very good nevertheless. More space madness from Solar Fields with a very hypnotic track, lacks real stucture but doesn't really hurt here. Analog Pussy do Aphex Twin and its by far the most experimental track here, a bit repetive though. Maybe it will grow on me. Next up is Asura with a track which is also featured on 3DVision's Module 1. A nice melodic and subtle break between the other trax. Fingertwister starts 808state-ish in a progressive house mix. Excellent basswork and some housy percussion cannot hide that the track itself is a bit thin. AZtech is kinda Amon Tobin on Dub but the track itself isn't that memorable. Eargear is again experimental central, some Aphex Twin distortion, some triphop rhytms and some piano but the track itself is kinda repetive. Trancefield offers 2 and a half minute of heartbeats and is a nice closing tune. Its always good to have some albums around that don't follow the linear paths and 'Chiller Waves' is clearly one of those although some tunes are a tad too experimental for my liking, especially on the 2nd half of the album. 7.5/10. PKS
(APL07): Analog Pussy Records isn`t exactly known for chilling releases. Now they are trying it out with a chill out compilation, just like most labels these days. Dave Young (Chi-Ad) starts the whole thing with a very beautiful ambient track, with a few careful sounds. Track 2 is by Zerotonine (Daniel Mondry). This is also very slow and relaxing ambient. The track becomes pretty nice at the end, when a melody comes in. Sonic Fusion (Thomas Herbst) usually makes very tribal stuff. Here, he give us an ambient track, with very little evolving, but pretty relaxing and it reminds me a bit of old Warp releases. Track 4 is by Void (Rob Muller), but is remixed by Fingertwister (Daniel Skantze). This track doesn`t impress me much. They have tried to be experimental, but it sounds very industrial and noisy. Solar Fields is beginning to get a nice reputation with a lot of good ambient releases, including his album Reflective Frequencies that came out on Ultimae Records 2001. The track we get here is not on the album. Really beautiful floating ambient with almost no rhythms. Analog Pussy themselves give us track 6. Down tempo rhythms with some weird sounds above. Not really impressive, because very little happens in this track. Track 7 is a new track by Asura. This track is also found on the newest chill out compilation released on 3D Vision Relax (Module 01). A pretty easy digestible chill out track, with some vocals. Then Fingertwister (Daniel Skantze) delivers a pretty nice track which reminds me a bit of the Gabriel Le Mar style. Some housy rhythms and a pretty atmospheric sound picture. Track 9 is by Aztech (Tobias Lilja) who has made a really peculiar track with a lot of noisy sounds. Very experimental and exciting, but not very nice. Then Eargear delivers a jazzy track with a noisy sound picture. Trancefeld (Pilipp Dransfeld) give us the last track on this compilation. A really short outro track lasting for only two minutes. Chiller Waves is far away from the best chill out compilations released 2002. Again, maybe an example of the result when music becomes mainstream and trendy, like chill out music has become the last two years. But anyway, there are a couple of interesting tracks on this one too.
