Guest Stormbringer
Front Line Assembly - Colombian Necktie Artist: Front Line Assembly Title: Colombian Necktie Label: MASH Date: 1998 Track listing: 01. Evil Playground (Chainsaw Mix by Tim Schuldt) 02. Colombian Necktie (Grit Your Teeth Mix by Cydonia) Review: I´ve been a big fan of Front Line Assemblys music since the late eighties, and they have really evolved since then. Bill Leeb, the brain behind the band, has picked up influences from many different kinds of music over the years, and in 1998 they released a double-album with remixes called "Re-Wind". One CD with remixes by themselfs and one CD with remixes by other artist. Three of those remixes were made by psychedelic trance-artists. About the same time F.L.A. also released a CD-maxi, "Colombian Necktie", including a Tim Schuldt remix not on the doubble-CD. When the label MASH released a 12" with two of those remixes (also in 1998) they got the tracks mixed up, so instead of the GOArgemix of "Colombian Necktie" by Tim Schuldt the Chainsawmix of "Evil Playground", also made by Tim Schuldt, got released on that 12". This review might be confusing because I will review all three tracks even though there´s only two on the actual record :-) "Evil Playground" Chainsaw mix by Tim Schuldt (10/10) is an absolutely amazing killerremix of a pretty lame original. Tim has only saved a tiny portion of the original and then transformed that into one of the most hard-hitting trancestormers ever made. This is true terrortrance for people who really want to dance like hell, or maybe music to scare old people with :-) This is almost as nasty as trance can get without becoming something else. His skilled balance between the dark atmospheric samples and the psychotic rhythm is truly awesome, and my heart starts pounding like a pile-driver every time I hear this music. This chainsawmix keeps building and building in intensity, and when you think it reached climax it then slows down and children starts to sing. Then it really kicks off again, now even more energetic and ruthless. This track can also be found on the Tim Schuldt "Single Collection" and the F.L.A. 2CD "Re-Wind" if you can´t find the MASH-release. "Colombian Necktie" Grit Your Teeth mix by Cydonia (8/10) is pretty true to the original song by Front Line Assembly in some aspects but it´s much harsher. After a short intro the song really gets started without delay, and it´s energetic and kicking from the beginning to the end with intense dark melodies, varied sounds and interesting rhythmpatterns. This remix works both on the EBM-floor as well as on the trancefloor in the middle of the night, and I consider this remix to be one of Cydonias best tracks ever. This remix can also be found on the F.L.A. 2CD "Re-Wind" and the Cydonia album "In Fear Of A Red Planet". "Colombian Necktie" GOArge mix by Tim Schuldt (10/10) is NOT!!! on this MASH-release. It can only be found on the F.L.A. CDM "Colombian Necktie" as far as I know. It´s a pity that it hasn´t been released on vinyl because it´s almost as great as the Chainsawmix of "Evil Playground", massive goosebumpalert! Just like the Chainsaw remix it´s almost a new track with very little left of the original. Tim added several new sad melodies and spiced the whole brew up with lots of aggression and energy. The result is another nightstormer that will rock any dancefloor. This kind of borderland-trance, between psytrance and EBM, which all three tracks represents, fits me perfectly because I started out listening to electronic music in the early eighties before there even was something called trance. Guest col_klink3[at]hotmail[dot]com
One of the first records I picked up, early in my electronic explorations... it took a while for my untrained ear to warm up to it, but now I realize how lucky I was to stumble across this gem.... a harder edge and gothic sounds, that's what this release is all about...very very cool.... Guest djInvisible_jsp[at]hotmail[dot]c
Disgusting. . . This is one of my favorite singles. It is a blend of my two favorite styles of music, industrial and psy-trance. I wish there were more remixes of bands such as Skinny Puppy, Noise Unit, and Haujobb. If you like this, then get the SYB Unity Newttwerk Experience's "Space Puppy", a tribute to Skinny Puppy. This track is sick and is dedicated to one of the best bands ever!
