Guest Stormbringer
Paps And Yumade - Databass 1 Artist: Paps And Yumade Title: Databass 1 Label: Databass Date: 2001 Track listing: 01. Paps : Do U Know ? 02. Yumade : Hair Zatz Review: This is the first release from the label DATABASS MUSIC and I´ve had it in my possession for some time know. I didn´t really know what to write in my review so that´s why I´ve waited so long to review it. Some of you might have done your homework and you should know by now that both Paps and Yumade usually creates very minimal and technoid trance. Some people even refuse to call it trance at all and I can understand them. I tried to mix both this ep and the second release from Databass Music (review in progress) with some swedish techno and it worked great so it´s no understatement that the sound of Databass Music is very technoid indeed. The most obvious thing that really differs between this sound and the "real" technosound are the loops. Paps and Yumade don´t use loops in the same way as the traditional technoartists and the drumsounds are pretty different too, but I didn´t notice that when I mixed the different kinds of music together. This ep is a good example of music that could work great both on the trancefloor and the technofloor at the same party. The Paps track "Do U Know?" (6/10) is slamming techno-trance with some psykosounds as usual with Paps. This is not one of the best tracks he´s made but it´s ok if you like his unique sound. Yumade "Hair Zatz" (7/10) is a track that really differs from the usual slow (and nothing will ever happen in this track so why do you even bother to listen to it?) style of Yumade. I haven´t heard anything that I really liked with Yumade previous to this ep but "Hair Zatz" is energetic and pumping enough to get me interested. If you ask me... this is the best track so far from Yumade, but I haven´t heard his ep´s released on Shpastic Elastic so I might have missed some of his best tracks? The first compilation from Databass Music "Winter Session" has just been released and the Paps track is on that compilation if you can´t find the vinyl. If you´re not too afraid of the borderland between trance and techno then this ep could be worth checking out?
Guest Stormbringer
Yumade isn´t a soloartist. Yumade = Laurent Barateau & Pierre Busson. Sorry about that mistake!
jaimz
Although I haven't heard 'Do U Know?' I really think Yumade's 'Hair Zatz' [143bpm / 6:25] is one of Yumade's better tracks. Yumade seemed to have settled into a bit more of a groove production-wise, and I much prefer them moving more towards the techno edge and away from the technoid sound. 'Hair Zatz' is almost exactly what I'd be wanting to hear in the dark of the night. Lots of gradual filters, reversed percussion, the usual funky stuff that produces a groove while messing with your psyche at the same time. The Yumade track also appears on a Gaia XI compilation, which is why I've heard that and not the Paps.

Basilisk
Interesting & abstract minimal/tech/prog mish-mash.

Guest Tchankov I.V.
Yumade track is somewhat trippier then Paps & yes, one of the better ones from them. I'd call it effective groove modulation. Paps track is more or less what you can expect from this project, a little more concentrated on the techno feel rather then psy-grooves & effects. 7,5/10 for the EP.
