Guest Stormbringer
Paste - District 9 / Tolle Artist: Paste Title: District 9 / Tolle Label: Interzone Date: 2001 Track listing: 01. District 9 02. Tolle Review: I reviewed the first release from the Swiss label Interzone some days ago and I wasn´t very nice as some of you might remember? I said my honest opinion and it was pretty mean, sorry! I´ve now bought the second release from Interzone with two tracks by Paste. Paste has released several ep´s and they all have something in common, the beat. I think the crispy dry beat of Paste is almost hypnotic and there´s no other artist in the world who can create such a groove with so few sounds, not even X.V. Kilist. It´s a pity that the rest isn´t as good as the beat (which I really love). Listening to Paste is like going by a construction site everyday and watching a building rise to the stars. When it´s done you´re impressed but all that wait makes you want to speed things up. The changes in Pastes music are so subtle and the progression is so slow that you just have to love minimal music to appreciate it. I understand if some people get bored to death by this kind of slow almost static music but when it comes to Paste I´m not one of those people. This release, which I believe is the latest release from Paste, has more energy than previous releases and I think it´s the best one they´ve released since Shpastic Elastic 005. Well... if this release was as good as "Microwave"... I WOULD THEN HAVE WRITTEN THIS REVIEW IN CAPITAL LETTERS ;-) Watch my top ten of all time if you don´t understand what I mean. "District 9" (8/10) has a typical Paste beginning with very little action. I saw a Mr Bean episode the other day when he was trying to get passed a very old lady walking very slowly down the stairs (the elevator was broken). I feel the same frustration as he did, it´s almost painful, but then when I´m about to give up, then the flow of "District 9" has cought me and I can´t stop listening. Things are added along the way towards the end but I have big problems to notice them one by one. I know it´s a great beat with some percussions and some crazy samples combined with some sort of howling sound but that´s more or less everything I can say. Some of you might find more things to describe and some might find this as interesting as watching grass grow. "Tolle" (9/10) feels like it´s missing the usual first two minutes of the Paste sound but that´s something really good. I often feel that their tracks are the best just at the end, and how would it sound like if they did start at that point? HALLELUJAH!!! "Tolle" is in my opinion one of the best tracks ever made by Paste. If you´re into their minimalistic sound, then buy this ep. I think it´s one of their best releases yet. I hope there´s a LP/CD coming soon. After so many ep´s... well, it´s time for a full lenght release now!
Guest MK
Cannot wait for a Paste album - their eps are a real cock-tease. I love their stuff and finally Tolle is released, it's been one of my faves for a few months now. District 9, I hadnt heard b4, and it's quite delightful as well. Excellent Work!
