Guest Stormbringer
Tul - Frequencies Artist: Tul Title: Frequencies Label: Tribal Bionic Date: 2002 Track listing: 01. Nation Drops 02. Atomim War Review: Tribal Bionics Records is a new Israeli label with a very fresh sound, atleast this first release made by Tul (Tal Ben Ari), an artist I´ve never heard of before. Both tracks on this ep sounds very different and not at all Israeli in any way. I probably shouldn´t classify this strange stuff so I won´t. The beat is more or less of the standard progressive kind but with some crazy changes and breakes now and then. On top of that there´s a massive amount of echoing noises, way beyond what you possibly can imagine. Let me illustrate it with an equation: (a box of instruments) + (a kindergarten) = "Musik". Ha ha! Well it isn´t THAT crazy :-) It´s only one, two or three echoing sounds at the same time but they change a lot during both tracks so I get the feeling that someone tries every instrument in the box if you understand what I mean? I really love weird music but this is too much even for me. Some might find this record pretty creative but I guess that most people will probably only find it extremely tiresome. There´s no real flow in the baseline, there´s no melody, and all of those noises may cause some serious braindamage after too massive exposure! This isn´t as mental as most music released on Demon Tea and Psy Harmonics, and it hasn´t got that daft positive vibe of the Finnish scene either, but it´s still very strange music. Will it work on the dancefloor? I don´t think so, and I don´t know what you could mix it with? But I have to say that it´s brave to release something this odd as the first release on a new label. ukiro
Come on Stormbringer, this isn't all that weird. I find it very tasteful actually, a bit like the Turbo Trance sound combined with the cool scando temper and some bursts of freaky sounds woven into it. This is one of the best EPs I've bought recently, and I'm _not_ a big fan of full-on crazyness, which should say a lot. One of the tracks (can't remember which is which) is triplet-based too, and triplets rule, so this gets a 8 out of 10 from me which is unusual. Very much recommended if you want something fresh that oozes of quality.
Guest Nothing[at]isaidnothing[dot]com
It's a bit to freaky... not that good i'll give it 6/10 (
Guest Stormbringer
I still think both tracks ARE weird but the b-side (with the triplets) is the craziest one. I just consider those echoing noises that´s a major part of both tracks to be too many and too loud. My first reaction when I first heard this ep was that it sounded great and very innovative, but after I had listen to it several times I changed my mind. I often get carried away when I hear something fresh and innovative because I buy so many records and most of them sound very similar. This ep breaks some boundaries but I still don´t think I like it very much. I like experimental stuff and innovative music in general but I don´t like everything that´s experimental and innovative!
