Guest Deku81
Cwithe - Illegal Artist: Cwithe Title: Illegal Label: Blue Room Date: 1996 Track listing: 01. 08'05" Tellus D 02. 08'29" Memory Foam 03. 07'43" Down To Earth 04. 07'01" Who Are You Now? 05. 08'27" Injection 06. 08'17" I Don't Wanna Shrink 07. 05'24" 160o Madness 08. 08'09" Portamental Review: Ok this sounds just like psy did back in 96.. but the tracks are very shifting in quality and some songs are a little bit strange and doesn't really fit in. There are lots of drums in some songs, like "who are you know" .. and "160o Madness" is actually a drum n bass song.. it seems like Blue Room likes that genre. This is a mediocre release with its highlight on track 6, 'I don't wanna shrink' .. this is a very good song!! Old classic piece of psy trance. Other good tracks are 'Injection' and 'Portamental'. Maybe I don't get it but I can't find this album very interesting. Rating: 5/10.
Guest Snow Dog
Well i think that Memory Foam is a really good techno/trance track, and I like the d&b one too. The rest is not so interesting, but if you're into that minimal sound, you'll probably love it. 5.5/
Guest aozi
"the sound of 96"..... hmmm..... i reckon this is a lot more in tune with todays psytek releases than the old skool goa melodic stuff. Finally Heard 2 trax off this at a party (Rainbow Serpent) and they were good. Still there are only 3-4 good trax on this so look before you jump. AutoMath
Guys. This Album is freaking exellent. Bought it from the second-hand boxes at at techno store. This sounds just as fresh today as then. maybe people didn't get it back then but I've always liked Jens Valdebäcks style. (Is he swedish btw?) Wery interesting and well-produced sounds, all tracks are good enough according to me. Sensitive and beautiful music. But what is the album-title and the text "get one now - soon it will be illegal" refeering to? 8/
Trance2MoveU
Illegal. As in it should be illegal to bore me in this manner. This came out in 1997? Someone seems to have missed the goa trance bus. Unless this duo were minimalists from the future who came back to 1997 to say: "Enjoy all the melodic goa trance while you can Earthlings, for we are the future." Which I suppose would make them prophets. It's very minimal sounding without any of the stuff that made goa trance great in the golden age. Goa-Head
Yeah this is a strange release if you consider when it was released and the label released upon. But Cwithe was never a 100% Goa act, like most (all?) other Dutch artists of the time. Skip this and listen to their album Route 303 under the Acid Lab alias. That said I still enjoy this one but probably because I like the normal Trance sounds of the 90's because a good album is certainly not. DoktorG
Hey Goa heads, why no love for this album? I admit, firstly, that I'm a bit of a fan of the short-lived "psybreaks" or "breaktrance" movement, enjoying the excellent 21-3 compilations, Deviant Electronics, Germinating Seeds of Doda and so on. I also love drums and complex rhythms; full-on with its super-repetitive generic bass line (I can't say bass lines, cos there's only one), simple drums and non-entrancing stop-start buildups just can't do it for me. Those biases on the table, I enjoy this album, though it took me a number of listens to like it. The mix of drum n bass, breaks and Goa melodies and warbles is interesting to me because it tends to rid the music of any "Euro" tendencies (please understand that this is comment on cheesy, commercial "Euro" club "trance", not a political/social comment), replacing it with complex, entrancing polyrhythms and more of a tribal, even "third world" kind of feel. There are excellent examples of this on Illegal such as "I don't wanna Shrink" with its jungle sounds, "Tellus D", "Memory Foam" and "Injection" which is probably my favourite. Admittedly not all tracks are so great and "160 Madness" is an instance of that. However, there is a strong spirit of experimentation on this album which I have to salute. This album is far from being great as it is simply too fragmented, but if anyone out there likes psybreaks, then this is worth a listen or two. ~*~
