shahar@isratrance
Krumelur - Minimal Animal Artist: Krumelur Title: Minimal Animal Label: Crotus Date: 2002 Track listing: 01. 08'22" Minimal Animal 02. 10'28" Nuts 03. 07'21" Bending Birdbeats 04. 06'56" The Antpeople 05. 09'25" Knorr 06. 08'55" What Do You Think ? 07. 09'30" Big Troublems 08. 09'39" Warm Swarm Review: A nice surprise from this new artist and new label. About time new will also be refreshing in our trancey musical world. Krumelur is Fredrik Larsson, from the talent infested Malmoe in Sweden. His musical vision is a bit different than the Malmoe MPDQX gang though. It carries inside a steady, though subtle, stream of insaneness. Let's say that if the Finnish would make minimal psytrance- that how it would sound... Krumelur offers truly minimal yet totally psychedelic music, showing that minimal music definitely doesn't have to be boring. The album offers a great variety of music, slow and fast, hard and soft, middle-of-the-night mind twisters to almost jazzy slow trance. It's all very interesting and never boring, there's always something happening with liquid sounds, squeaks and tweaks, crazy scratching noises, surprising turns and twists in the story. It really succeeds in painting around you a different world from another dimension. This CD dwells quite a lot in my CD player since I got it- it's great for home listening and there are also guaranteed floor stormers like Big Troublems (T7), Knorr (T5) and for weirder moments Nuts (T2). The sound can use an uplift, especially in the kick-bass department, but this is still very enjoyable and highly recommended. Bottom Line: Surprise CD of the month- fresh, fun and totally psychedelic, if you like your music to takes you somewhere else- get it! Favorites: All. MIT
Krumeler is new danish label Crotus Records first release. To me the whole sound of this album is really fresh to my increasingly jaded ears. It has a strange and very appealing mix between very earthy sounds (forest ambience drenched in reverbs) and very tech. influenced stuff. OK...the tracks. Track one is described well by it's name, it's slow chunky and minimal with some nice whippy synth lines. Track2 is a faster one (143bpm). It features some nice choppy drum programming (hello recycle) plus some good synth squelches. Halfway through it turns all kooky and strange...i love it! Track3 is just plain weird...very droney sounding but i still like it cause it's different. Track 4 starts with a great james brownesque loop and some nice harp sounds. Then the beats kik in and it's all weird again...minimal and crazy! Track 5 is bit more of a cranker...drenched in reverb with some coolio arppegio sounds (not cheesy...just strange) plus some tight high pass filter synths...probably my favourite track. Track 6 is wet and slimy. A really deep bass line and some random pitch oscilations...plus some nice drones - all very atmospheric. Track 7 is once again nice...rolling bass and quite busy over the top...nicely constructed. Track 8 is a funky ass slower number (125bpm) with some nice breakbeat sections...i really like this one! All up this album is very refreshing. It's quite psychadelic yet is never too busy and the heavy use of reverb throughout gives it a nice atmospheric vibe. My score...9/
