Guest Tomvcarter
I have only listened to this once so far, and was a little dissapointed, as i am normally a huge fan of Iboga. But Setsuko has given me new hope, and i will go and give it another few goes, i did enjoy the Antix tune though. Dont expect anything you would normally expect from iboga, but if you want advice i think setsuko gives a good review. Will be interested to see what everyone elses view is, dont be put off, Iboga normally rocks, and i am sure this will to.
Setsuko
V/A - Mixture Artist: Various Title: Mixture Label: Iboga Date: 2002 Track listing: 01. 07'23" Lando And Chrisma : Interesting Places 02. 06'44" Amphasis : Nasty 03. 07'51" Slugger : Automan 04. 07'52" Alegria : We Will Dance 05. 08'00" New Disco Science Alliance : Fractal Fuckers (Snorkel Edit) 06. 07'17" Eargear : Diet Disco 07. 09'58" Antix : Flipped 08. 06'48" Platform : Interport Review: Iboga exploring other dimensions ... the style on this cd is different compared with their previous releases , and I like this effort ... a bit more house influenced , very minimalistic progressive psytrance but extremely smooth and groovy . if you were amazed by the baluns 'otherwise' , you'll undoubtedly like this too ... #1 is a nice warm up, the sounds are very chilled , the groove is pretty hypnotising #2 great track by Elser , it gives a kind of slow motion dance effect to me ... the structures are stretched , ultimate groove #3 is a pumping killer , very hard bass , i realy like this... #4 one of the most smooth tracks I've ever heard , one of the best Alegria tracks with a very hypnotising melody #5 yeah , another floorkiller ... hard groovy with subtle psychedelic twisted sounds on top of it ... just perfect #6 this track shouldn't be in here , it is BAD - very lame and irritant sounds in here ... #7 oh my god , the Strom bros. do it again , clear production ... very tribal stomper ... the best track if I would pick one ... I can't ignore shaking when i hear Flipped #8 the atmosphere in here is a bit darker , the kick is nice but imo this could have been done better , but it's not bad ... overall , a great compilation ... not for the hard progressive fanatics , but more for the grooveshakers ... highlights in here are 2,3,4(!),5 and 7(!) ... this iboga release is worth my psychedelic 8/10. Guest Mescalinium
It's unfortunate, though perhaps unsurprising, that many are so quick to dismiss something new, something different. I have yet to give this album intensive listening, but thus far it sounds fresh, funky, and overridingly groovy. A bit of a stylistic departure for Iboga, to be sure, but diversity coupled with quality is always the benchmark for a truly great label. My compliments to the Iboga team and Constance Journey for, at the very least, a release not afraid to deviate from the norm. Now let's just hope they release this on LP... (another sign of a good label
Michiel
Respect !, Iboga is revolutionary. It takes alot of courage to do something new, be differt form the rest but still release kick ass music. I think Iboga is doing the right thing and offers a wide range of progressive groovy goa, they show progressive does not neccescary have to be dark and hard, but can also be groovy and relaxing. Can't wait for the LP
Guest russ
i have huge respect for iboga (my favorite label along with digital structures), and i think its's cool they were brave to do something different. and this is very different, it being an outside dj's selection as opposed to an iboga compilation with all their dutch masters. but to bring the focus back to the actual music on the cd a bit, i have to say the attempt didn't really work that well for me. there are certainly highlights. i think the first track is incredible. 10/10! for me on that one. very disco-y and sexy and groovy. that one is a real bed (-room) groover. i also liked the groove of the amphasis track. the highlight after "interesting places" is of course the antix track. this sounds like the strom brothers in beat bizzarre mode, but not as psychedelic. not one of their best tracks for me, but still very very good. that's the good bit. but the other five tracks just didn't do it for me. i like the fat groove of the alegria track, but the house singing is just extraordinarily annoying ("dance, dance, dance to the beat of your heart" or something like that). i think emok wants to incorporate more housey elements into trance, and i'm not against that at all. but those cheesy house lyrics should stay in the muscle-bound NY house parties, if you want my opinion. filur (seb from son kite) shows how to take the good stuff from house and leave off the bad, but i am afraid this track is a perfect example of taking the bad along with the good. the slugger track is also terminally boring and doesn't go anywhere. ditto for NDSA. these tracks might be cool attempts, but to me they just don't work. as the risk of sounding offensive, they are just too "white", while trying to sound "black". maybe white technical musicians should stick to their strengths. i for one am waiting for the day when black american musicians with real soul discover the delights of psychedelic trance and wipe the floor with everybody!! but until then...we have this, a brave attempt with nice moments, but not a winner overall, and not half as good as the DS Baluns compilation which rocks 100% from beginning to end. Guest Tomvcarter
I wrote a review earlier, when i first bought this album, and did not think much of it, but now i have changed my mid considerably. The Amphasis tune is very good moody monotone stuff a bit like his best tune (on Solar Seeds comp.) in my opinion. The first four tracks are awsome esp the slugger (one half of necton) tune. They are slow funky, and very deep, its not that danceable, but to have one at home its perfect smoking music. The New Disco... (aka Ticon) tune is a bit dissapointing, compared to there other stuff. Eargar come up with a good tune, in a similar style to there "Captain Puk" tune on Underconstruction 2 which is awsome! It is a very good album, but i found i had to open my eyes to enjoy a vareity of styles, and this supprised me at how good it was. So what if it has a slightly housey sound, it even though a lot of house is shit, this uses the groove that house has very well, while never being cheezy. Give it a chance, listen to it a few times, and i think you will love it, i do. 8/
