Guest Blue Spectral Monkey
V/A - Orbis 2 Artist: Various Title: Orbis 2 Label: Sphere Date: 2002 Track listing: 01. 8'41" Elysium Project : Gate 66 02. 8'28" Mekano : Land of Puu Pu 03. 5'54" Shaff Puff : Vol n Hold 04. 7'21" Homegrown Lifeform : Levitation 05. 8'10" Prodigal Sun : Controller 06. 7'34" Loa : Microcosmos 07. 10'18" In R Voice : Other Side of Morning 08. 6'43" Dark Soho : Depth of Emotion (IRV remix) 09. 10'05" Vasya Psykovsky : Kookaburr Review: #1 elysium project kicks it off with some nice twisty talky vocals that fade into some what bangy heavy clangy metal drum sounds over standard thumps. some nie little percs and sounds groove , then a decent sample, bassline picks up, starts to groove more , goes on and on about starting to groove, some sounds come in and out, breaks again with some island feeling, like steel drums and then into the funky rolling bit, with warm pads and more clang. later on with the honky trance sound. a good night - starter. mekano - #2 : delays, sizzles, wind, bass comes in, clompy bass and zips. very small funk. bassline doubles up. percs build, nice use of real-ish drums, spooky/odd female voices from the ethers, clickygrindy leads, and tricks with the high/ mid zips/builds. more real slamming drummage/grindy bits to end. #3: burbling tweaky micro-snare/tom rolls and kick comes in incredibly! zooba-zoob buzzing rolly tweaks. the upright bass sund is nice, gets it going, and the zippy synths are well, moving... advancing. this one holds its own. #4 starts off with chilled atmosphere and nice similar feel, takes 2 minutes to really start though, bassline 303's its way to the top of the mix, then the break spaces everything out, bass continues, drops back into the groove with a bit more intensity... some cool filters and a sample, drops out, drops in, funky honkin. #5 watery wooby intro but brief, gets pumping, gets that feeling like the air pressure is changing, this one would fit into a very deep mix well, quite dense with changes and layers, great for driving fast! funny sample, but only once.. grindy and quirky somehow. last half of the song not as strong imo. #6 very bouncy , you all gotta see the movie microcosmos- very well done, as is this track, small details wisk by and funny voices thru deep delay breakdown into some sort of live bass funk back into it, stomping, marching like ants, chirping, psychedelic space drizzled over thumps. builds itself into a gigantic beast over time and then gets smaller and smarter, plus wacky voice clipping lines back into the blasting end. #7 breathing, beeps, washy, increasy tweaks over nicely fazed hihats, fills the room with sound, huge pad washes. panning hazey strange break, drops wonderfully into the beat again, BOM! zoom-vibes. delayed out. high end melody allllmost starts, then drops into grindy atari bass and nintendo tune?!?! fuck yeah. pumping, strange. tweaky middle. big finish. #8 minimal at first and perky, trademark guitars in this one repeat but briefly, dark as hell. kick and bass is the main drive here. the end rocks the casbah. headbangin and raw, wide open. almost a classical mushroom feel at the end of this. #9 silly sample, re: insomnia, no point to it tho. insect communication, and ominous. a full feeling, grooves, dark midnight style. playful. twisty and plastik, melty, then more with the goofy silly samples, the lead line is a crazy crazy voice thing, that grows and goes along nicely with the bass.... gets warm and synthy, only to drop you screaming into the madness for the last bit, and then the mix-out silly sample... overall this comp is a serious listen, good good good, better than most IMO 8.5/
