Guest ZARAKNON
Orichalcum - Live Artist: Orichalcum Title: Live Label: Creamcrop Date: 1999 Track listing: 01. 06'24" Wicked 02. 10'37" Homes 03. 11'08" Are You? 04. 10'41" Egg Cracked 05. 20'48" Elevation 06. 11'59" Cosmic Pillow Review: The Psy Masters from Denmark are back with a live recording at Amager Bio, Copenhagen, that is a MUST if you don't have their debut album, like me. First 3 tracks are taken from 'Orichalcum & The Deviant' but the live mixes are worth it even if you already have the originals. Track 4 is also a remake of an older track (The Egg, never heard it yet) and 5 & 6 are completely new. So let's start: The bassdrum catches you right from the first second. Soon a certain sound appears in the background, coming closer and closer, at the latest that moment you notice that it's Wicked Mille (if you haven't yet guessed it from the title;-)) and quite a good remix, with some new sounds, but unfortunately it's a bit too short, the 'grand finale' of the original has just been left out. How could they?! Anyway, right after that the next track, Alien Homes, sets in, now just called “Homes”, and what a Killer tune it is, like the original but ‘pimped’, i.e. longer and with even some more sounds eating your brain with the devouring mouths of millions of extraterrestrial nightmare creatures, really, it is a very screechy track that makes me think of a whole swarm of xenomorphs, contaminating whole planets under terrifying screams and wiping out each little trace of life to make them their new alien homes. Amazing trip! My favourite psy track ever! Next is Where Are You?, now just called “Are You?”, originally produced by The Deviant (=Orichalcum + Serge Souque from Total Eclipse), another MONSTER of a track! Almost as good as Homes, pure psychoactice power!!! While your head is still droning from the monstrous spectacle that tracks 2&3 are, the following track comes in with a pumping stomping bassline which gets topped with some strange sound effects, the frightening melodies are gone, however Egg Cracked lives from these strange noises, and I like it very much because of its concentrated weirdness and trippiness. Next one, Elevation, kicks major ass, with an uplifting beat which remains throughout the track, there are weird nioses in it of course and it is highly dancable. The best moment in it is the delicious melody from about 3:30 to 4:30. The whole track may become boring because of its huge length and you think there's always the same sounds but it's not, you're just not aware of it cause you are in deep TRANCE! The magic of this track is that all these strange (and brilliant!) sounds are arranged in a way that creates imaginative melodies in your mind, i.e. the melodies aren't there in reality! Elevation is also a very loud tune because there are so many soundscapes layered on top of each other. That means it is very complex and you have to concentrate on one of the layers not to get annoyed by it. This makes a cool effect cause your mind changes the layer to concentrate on so many times during these more than 20 minutes (it's just like when you're looking at a near object and at another moment looking at the same thing from a higher distance, but you do it with your ears, so foreground and background change very often), that you won't always notice it, and this is, as I said, the magic effect of this track. All in all I would call Elevation the ultimate challenge for advanced listeners and those who want to become one, because it is not easy listening to it without losing one's concentration or falling asleep or prssing the skip button after about 10 minutes. But if you avoid these (you definately do if you dance to it) you'll certainly enjoy it, apart from that Elevation is a real delight both for dancers and home listeners. The last track, Cosmic Pillow, well.....it is beatless Ambient stuff, and it works as a very long outro, to calm us down after all the killer tracks before. The whole thing consists of one deep and relaxing synth sound accompanied by some other quiet noises in the background creating a warm but strange atmosphere. It doesn't matter if you fall asleep during this one. All in all, this is a very good live set by a group of gods and deserves a full 10/10 from me. Guest naj
Hadn't listened to psychedelic for a loooong time but since I was always a fan of orchalcum I picked this up. I was not sorry! its blinding trance and bears up to listen after listen (unlike alot of psy) 'cosmic pillow' and the tweaked 'wicked' really stand out. 9/10 (would be 10/10 but for some awkward edits/mixes between the tracks) One final thing: it really need to be listened to as a whole I reckon. Guest TJ
This is so damn good. Complete psychedelic madness, it never lets up and some of the tracks really grind you into the ground. 'Full-on' is an understatement. Since its live it is better to listen to the whole thing in one sitting so you can really get into the music. Guest DPD
VERY VERY good! excellent trance...at sometimes transitioons are weak but the melodies make up for it and some!...definately one of my best CDs, i think orichalcum might be my favorite artist, above hallucinogen, not in technique, but because they convey a great vibe! Guest Acidhive
Really good, this deserves 9/10 !! I listened to it and thought: Yeah, this is how Psytrance should be.. Just banging along, with all those weird changing noises and shit...!! Great stuff. Especially that track Elevation.. Damn, what a long track! And still it retains that great orichalcum quality throughout... ! I like it very much! My advice: Buy this if you're looking for some seriously good psytrance!! Old style, but still sounding really fresh!

Guest MG
Boring, IMHO. I bought both albums @ same time. A few inspired moments, but largely boring unless dancing. I might change but so far...Boring
Manuser
WOW!! that's the first time i am impressed with the last (ambient) track of a psytrance album. This ending track really ends the CD perfectly!! so deep! This is one of the most interesting psytrance albums ever made. Really impressed, especially by tracks 3, 4 and 6.
