Guest Scott.Kanov[at]v2music[dot]com
Baraka - Sonic Massage Artist: Baraka Title: Sonic Massage Label: Starchild Date: 1999 Track listing: 01. 09'28" In Ka : Big G 02. 06'18" In Sect : Hinterland 03. 08'10" Subcouds : Global Village 04. 07'06" Shakti Twins : Moon Palace 05. 07'50" Mindfield And Baraka : VD Massacre 06. 07'01" Quixotic : 32 Bit Priest 07. 08'46" Chi-ad : 12 Ohm 08. 07'37" Filthy Beasts : De Generate 09. 08'53" Double Dragon : Shudder Review: He's emerged as one of the greats of Return To The Source lore, and this release serves as Baraka's grand entrance. "Sonic Massage" strikes me as a perfect early-in-the-evening-but-I'm-havin'-it-anyway collection. It's bouncey and psychedelic, but it's far from light. Dig the crunchy guitars and wicked percussion on "VD. Massacre," not to mention the well-placed (if not unlikely) sample from the film "Ghostbusters." Chi-A.D.'s "12 Ohm" is another gem that winds and bends like an Alpine trail. "Shudder" is a fitting end to this one -- a full-on stormer that pushes and pulls you into submission. Top to bottom, this one's all about the dancefloor As expected, this album is expertly mixed; the builds are flawless and it's fluid enough to take you on "the journey." Sometimes, it's hard to get past all the extras in psy-trance. Amid the drugs, socializing, lollipops, glowsticks and chillout rooms, some people forget that the key is just to shut up and dance. Perhaps this is the CD that will serve as a reminder...yet another quality release from Starchild Records. 7.5/
freak51
The Filthy Beasts track. Oh my God, where did these people come from? That's among the finest sounds I have ever heard. It's those haunted vocal effects over that clearly insane industrially-influenced saw-like noise in the background that kills me every time. Worth it for just that track and #9, which sounds like a cross between Hallucinogen and X-Dream. Tasty fare, but you probably won't like it the first time through. It's harsh and very full.
