freak51 Posted May 17, 2000 Posted May 17, 2000 This is very nice record, mainly for tracks 1, 4, 6, 8. And yes, Seb Taylor is not only Shakta and Digitalis but Somaton. He's nothing if not busy! Quote
Guest Globalsteez Posted May 18, 2000 Posted May 18, 2000 Digitalis - The 3rd State Artist: Digitalis Title: The 3rd State Label: Matsuri Date: 1998 Track listing: 01. 06'43" Mutagen 02. 06'20" Slotek 03. 06'57" What Else You Got? 04. 06'14" Osho Drums 05. 05'58" Figments Of Reality (Funkopath Rmx) 06. 07'03" Telepresence 07. 06'08" Sound Junkie 08. 05'35" Dr Sembei 09. 05'35" The Improbable Voyage Review: If someone was to ask me what might be a good example of Psychedelic dance music that never really had any of the obvious signatures or characteristics of original Goa Trance music, then I might suggest something like this album to them. The Matsuri label (before the millenium was out) released some of the most mind expanding (both chilled out And banging) boundary pushing psy-trance scene related music to ever grace or blow a speaker. Since then, they've been having a wee bit of a rest it would seem. I think that Digitalis might well be the same guy (Seb Taylor) who fronts Shakta ('Silicon Trip'/'Enlightened Ape') though for my money you would never guess this to be the case as it sounds nothing like Shakta and is a far more involving and creative piece of music. It might even at times suit the term 'Psychedelic-Break-Trance' as it does certainly exhibit all of these qualities...and then some. Unless you haven't already guessed, I've actually been a big fan of this since it c! ame out and only just realised it hadn't even been reviewed yet! Shockaroonie!!! What else can I say to describe the actual album? Apart from its' general funky tastefullness and excellent sample use..nothing else matters...just find it And buy it. The thing is there's so much going on but it always holds itself together and never loses the groove. For me the feeling is tasty and crispy class right from its' start until its' finished. An excerise in funkin' groovy, well paced and highly tweaked acid funkouts with elements of rattling And regimental tranceular power breakage thrown in for good measure. Whoops!! My favourite tracks would have to be 1,2,3,6,7,8 And 9. A much overlooked classic then in my books, and as the good old Blue Room might say...PLAY LOUD!!!! 9/10 Quote
Basilisk Posted June 14, 2000 Posted June 14, 2000 I was never into this quite as much as I was into some of the other psybreaks out there... Osho Drums became a favourite over time however. Quote
Guest zaoi Posted August 9, 2000 Posted August 9, 2000 Nahh... if you want the most tasteful breaktrance then see if you can hunt up Metal Spark's masterpiece LP "Corrosive". even though its a couple of years old it sounds open and fresher than a lot of current releases. The Digitalis lp is pretty good in its own way, but for some reason i keep finding something better to play. Quote
Guest memetical Posted November 30, 2000 Posted November 30, 2000 Aaaahh ... "slotek" ... one of the best tracks ever. Even has a chorus! The chorus' sounds are so deep and incredible ... keeps me rewinding over and over to those parts. Forgot the name of the other Digitalis track that also uses those sounds. Quote
Guest Ubik Posted December 22, 2000 Posted December 22, 2000 Cool psychedelic breakbeat ! Very good production. I love the samples, especially in tracks 1 and 5 (Diissttoorrttiioonn of rreeaalliittyy). Cover art rocks, too ! My favourite here is Dr Sembei, which is more ambient. 1,2,5,6 follow right after. Overall 7.5/10 Quote
bomble Posted April 3, 2001 Posted April 3, 2001 What a bargain ! Due to Matsuri's departure, Chaosunlimited.co.uk 'gave' this to me for £3 ( less than $5) ..... what a treat. It was about the only Matsuri released album that I missed during their heyday, and though it's 3 years after it reached the shelves, it's a good one to be sure ! Even at full price, this is good back-catalogue stuff. bomble Quote
Guest jumeredith[at]ikon[dot]com Posted August 24, 2001 Posted August 24, 2001 this album seems to combine the best of all genres of electronica. beats are fucking awesome on this one. beautiful and psychedelic leads. get this album. Quote
Guest rx7style Posted October 7, 2001 Posted October 7, 2001 Fuckin' awesome. That's all I have to say... funky, hard, and phat beats dominate, with kick-ass rhythms, and great 3D effects. I really like the Digitalis style, and it's extremely psychedelic... no minimal here, and it's eerily melodic in a darker sense. Every track moves nicely, nothing gets boring as there are breaks all over the place that spice it up. The only downside about this is that Seb Taylor could easily have released this album under the name "Shakta" as the sounds are very similar, but the style is slightly different and as I said, funkier with "Digitalis". A great psychedelic release none-the-less, so buy it. 8.5/10 Quote
seraph Posted December 19, 2001 Posted December 19, 2001 Great album. It is cute, jumpy, breakbeat trance album at it's best. 10/10 Quote
Guest spacemonkey - 604 Posted February 12, 2002 Posted February 12, 2002 great stuff, mayby not tottaly psy breakbeat, but i don't think it was the meaning of the album, it's more like psy-trance mixed with lots of breaks AND steady beats and drums to give the twirling screeks and bleeps a little extra. It's overwhelming and really psychedlic, and when listened to when a bit tired way to much for me, because you have the intense and compicated breaks and all the little sounds flying and shooting by. This album had lot's of energy and just keeps on rocking and shaking until you stereo will scream for a little rest Quote
Guest Davidtolsn Posted December 24, 2002 Posted December 24, 2002 this sounds like it was made in the early 90's. all that experimental "techno" shit that came out. the beats aren't hard enough and the sound effects are just bleeps and computer noises. i would not call it goa or psy. track 2 is listenable but it's not even worth downloading on mp3. this is one of those cds you'll listen to once and then put it away and forget you have it. 2.5/10 Quote
Guest Rx7style Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 Well I've had this for several years now and I listen to it all the time. Better than a lot of shit that's coming out these days... to each their own. Quote
abasio Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 A really great album Every track is very good but Figments of Reality is AMAZING!!! Quote
