psy-story

Thanks very much to everyone that responded to my earlier post ("please critique my set list!"); you people are *awesome*. Thanks for the encouragment and good vibes. Someone suggested I should post the story I am writing for my local weekly paper about psy-trance. I would love critique and suggestions for improvement. There is a section about the "history of psy-trance" that I am particularly worried about. I've never been to Goa, I was born well after the '60s, and information about psy is hard to find in the States and on the WWW. I figure if the piece can pass muster here, it can pass anywhere.

The story is aimed at people who have never, ever heard of psychedelic trance music -- which are most of the people in my town of Santa Barbara, CA. S.B. has no real electronic music scene at all. It's a rock n' roll town. People always ask if I am one of those "ravers." Damn. There is more interest in electronica among young people, however, and quite a few clubs downtown play house, progressive trance, breakbeat, jungle and more mainstream stuff like that.

The only reason a story about psy is running in a town with no psy-scene is that I happen to be the associate art director of the paper it is running in! I've been sweating the editor-in-chief for, like, two years. Needless to say, I get to design the story and the cover. If any of you designers out there have suggestions to make my layout more psychedelic, by all means speak!!

Which reminds me: I am desperate for a dope photo of a woman dancing to psy. I've taken photos at psy-shows before, but I suck, and it shows. I need a near-professional shot at a high resolution. Anyone? Bueller? You'll get a credit, of course, and my most heartfelt gratitude. I've been looking for *months* now.

And, oh yes, the piece is also designed to drive people in DROVES to S.B.'s first psy-trance party ever!!!

whoa, _very_ cool article, probably one of the best and most extensive ones i've ever read about psytrance :)

only thing i'm not sure about is what you mean exactly with 'sine-wave synthesizers" as most synthesizers have various waveforms and the sinewave is usually only being used for the kicks, as it's not exactly the most interesting waveform to manipulate .. maybe change it to virtual analog synthesizers?

and infected mushroom the biggest psytrance act? i'm not sure about that, but i wouldn't dare guessing who is either :)

anyway for the rest it's a great article .. keep up the good work man! :)

Wow, thanks, guys! You don't know how relieved I am that the PSYNEWS peeps liked the story! Thanks, Phaeton, for the advice: I've changed sine-wave to virtual analog. I used sine-wave just to be poetic, but being accurate is more important, I think. As for IM: the biggest psy-trance act -- I knew that that would be controversial. Just remember biggest doesn't always mean the best! Don't get me wrong: I love IM, and they are at least in California, the act that draws the most people to a party.

Strumpling: I got your email: I've uploaded the story to another site in case anyone else has problems with the first link. And I would love to talk to you about psy in S.B.!!
