sirade
Heya, Thought i'd start a post were we can discuse any tips, tricks or methods used for creating songs. Well, i just started making music again. in the past i only used fruity loops and rebirth. I have finally upgraded. I now use cubase sx3, reason 2.5 and have an emu xboard 25 midi keyboard pc 3ghz, 2gb ram, 180gb hd. I'm creting Psy/Goa trance. My biggest problem i have encountered with making songs is knowing where to start. So i was hoping if some of you guys could discuse your ideas in the creation of a song. For instance, Do you lay a drum, bass, or lead down first? Do you start at the begging of the song or middle? I have made some great combinations of tracks <patterns>. but i'm finding it dificult knowing where to use them at . What i have done so far is make a patern, drop it in the middle of my song and work my way out towards both the begining and the end. Also allow the song to morph to the intended pattern in the middle. Well any tips or tricks would be useful. Sirade-
Shaft
For instance, Do you lay a drum, bass, or lead down first? Do you start at the begging of the song or middle? 495233[/snapback] Probably been answered loads on here already, but I start initially with an idea - be it bass, drums, pads, lead etc. It could be a short motif or riff, or a long atmospheric pad line or whatever. Point is, I don't start intending the idea to be a song - I just roll with ideas and see if any develop into a song. Once the initial idea is down, then I usually write complimentary ideas - say I wrote a drum part first, I'd write a bass line next. Lastly I come to arrange it all and seam it together - this I find is the most boring part - Most of my music is locked up in my head because I can't find the patience with song structures and sequencing! mind.breeder
Tip - Don't limit yourself to style, genre or specific sound. Be inspired by evrything, take the best of every music and blend it with your own ideas and perception. Don't make yourself those "undergound" barriers like - keychanges suck, complex melodies are cheesy, I must use :this:, or else it's not goa/psy/death/speedcore and so on. Don't be afraid to experimentate with what you got. Give your tracks catchy motives or melodies or something to replay them for. Most tracks where automated acids and arpeggios do all the work sound lifeless and become boring very soon. For me that is Hope that helped

Also why do all the great ideas come while i'm in the shower when there is nothing to write these great ideas down. I'm going to invest in some crayon soaps. the stuff i played with when i was a little kid and write them on the wall in the shower 8).
