Guest bugbread
Ok, so I'm working on my first "real" psy track. It's Finnish in approach (except I'm not Finnish, have never been to Finland, and, come to think of it, have never met a Finn in person). The vocals are stolen from my girlfriend, who didn't know I was recording her at the time. It's very unfinished (needs more samples, and needs to be...uh...finished). So...whaddya think so far? www.bugbread.com (In the music section under Unfinished Tracks)
soem aeld
Funny track, so very weird melodie! "beestoo frieend, besto friend!" This is not my cup of tea, really. Cool drumy drums anyway.

DeathPosture
I see where you're going when you say Finnish in approach... ;o) But hey, the Finns are masters of madness... And this could might aswell have been the Faggots or Squaremeat or any other Exogenic-project... As Shpongled pointed out the production is very tight and very crisp... You are talented... No doubt about that... The only thing I don't really dig it actually the sample of your girlfriend... Sorry dude, but I hope you appreciate an honest opinion!? Great track! Guest Mindtwister
Hm,mm...Think this is a kind of Shaolin Wooden men Vs Texas Faggots =) Not my cup of tea but i like the drums after 3 min tho =) Take Care! //mindtwister
Guest bugbread
Thanks for the comments, guys. In a sense, I kinda have to keep the vocal samples. Basically, I recorded her singing REALLY badly, and then kept torturing her by putting different drum beats or intros on it and playing it in the middle of other music when she was at my house. I'd say, "Hey, listen to the new Mandalavandalz album I bought", play tracks 1 to 4 of Mandalavandalz, and then drop in some remix of her in the middle. So one day she said, "If you're gonna keep slaughtering that sample, do it with a proper song!" I suppose I'll just make a sample-free and sampley version. The other problem is that the stuff I was fiddling with to annoy her included lots of really warped and chopped up versions of the vocal bit, and she forbade me from making her voice sound "scary" in the 'official' song. Any recommendations of stuff to do with it? I plan on adding a few more changeups at the end, putting some more samples / parts in the middle to keep the same instrument being too repetetive...Right now that's all that's occurred to me. Guest Jikkenteki
Completely unrelated to the track, but I looked through your page some and noticed I had the exact same thought as you did when I first heard of mushipan several years back. Anyways on to the track itself... The main problem I have noticed is that some of the levels seems a bit out of balance. Some of the main synth lines seem to loud to me, while the kick and bass both lacking something. The snares in the break beat sort of sample seem a hair loud too. Several areas seem a bit hollow sonically, but then as you say, it is very unfinished so that is no real surprise. The track is on a loop in my headphones while I write this and one thing I noticing myself waiting for is a totally warped and time stretched version of the vocal sample... sort of a "Best Friend Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssssstttttttttt friend" kind of a thing. I dunno, just some random thoughts.
Guest bugbread
Jikkenteki: Sweet advice. I can check the levels right away, drop the synth and snare, and put a bit more oomph into the drum. Time stretching should also be possible without annoying anyone (er, without annoying her). I also wanted to put in a really gated, chopped up "Best frie e ee e ee e e e nd!" Wow, I was kinda wondering if I would get any really useful ideas from posting this, or if I was subconsciously just asking for an ego-stroking. Turns out I got some pretty darn workable, good advice. Thanks.
shpongled
It would be fun to try to do something for the vocal...... can you send it to me and tell the BPM of the track? You know if then you liked what i did for the vocal and used it your track you would have some real Finnish touch in the track. )) shpongledboy@hotmail.com
Guest Jikkenteki
Hi again Bugbread- One other thing I meant to mention, but obviously forgot was I would also recommended from this point on importing alot of sampled sounds and such as at the moment it is pretty apparent to my ears that the bulk of thing track was made on Fruityloops. As a fellow Fruityloops user I am well aware of the battle of trying rid your tracks of the "fruity" sound. One sugestion I might make is that if you have Soundforge, make your kicks in there. You'll get more sonic variation and also be rid of one of the tell tale Fruity signs at the same time. Also use alot of plug ins from outside sources to help fatten up or alter those fruity sounds into something more original. I'm no pro by any means, but if you are interested in exchanging Fruity tricks or tips feel free to write me at choisai@hotmail.com (I am also on MSN Messenger under the same address). I also like the gated idea for the sample, I've been trying to figure out how to do that internally in Fruity for awhile now as I always used to do it via hardware. Also, what part of Japan are you in? I am probably going to be swinging through Japan for a few weeks this winter and with any luck moving back at the end of next summer. Guest blink
not a bad first track bug. and concerning 'mushipan', i also had that confusion when i first went to japan. my wife (japanese), still laughs at me from time to time about that (among others:). your track is solid in production. what progs did you use? i would try putting a little reverb on your main synth lead, and USE PANNING! i tossed your file in sound forge, and played with your rhythms, and they would sound alot more dynamic. but keep working on this track man. its got alot of originality to it. mind checking out my latest track? ....organicparadox-grimmel........ blink
Guest Bugbread
Well, I'm just using Fruityloops. As Jikkenteki pointed out, I definitely suffer from the "hey, that's a fruityloops sample!" syndrome. Still, I tried to keep the really obvious samples to a minimum (except for the drum'n'bass fill, which really stands out to anyone who uses the program). Since putting up the track, I've put a bit more reverb on the bass, which stands out a lot more, and I'll try putting it on the synth. What would you recommend as far as panning? There aren't any parts that really call out for sweeping the sound left to right...But I have since put some stereo separation on the kick, so that it sounds more "3D". I suppose it would be a good thing to do the same to the vocals to make them seem less "flat". But I gather that's not what you're referring to. I'll check your track when I get home (I'm at work now...ho hum night shift). Thanks for the support. Just to clarify, it's not my first track per se, but it's my first psy track that got past the "play around for 20 minutes and stop forever" stage. On www.mp3.com I've got some more non-psy files, but "Uneasy Peep" is the only song that I consider to be a complete song. The others are just me playin' around with the program. And Shpongled, thanks for the offer, but in a sense this is a test for myself: can I make a complete song that I won't be ashamed to play in front of people? So, though I am really thankful for everyone's advice, I can't really ask for anyone to actually tweak or remix anything. Unless, of course, I finish the song, and then you can do a remix version, and then I can put it on a demo disc and get picked up by a record label and go on world tours and hang out with the major psy artists and produce a crossover mainstream psy album and become famous and then go on to produce for rock bands and pop stars and burn out and become self destructive and get featured in the scandal pages and become a recluse and develop some bizarre idiosyncrasies and ramble about aliens and the subverse stealing my spoons and eventually completely fold into myself and lose touch with reality. Uh...so maybe it wouldn't be a good idea. You know, I'm starting to think it isn't a good idea to make people do 17 hour shifts...the mind goes funny at this time of the day/night.
