CD Cover Price ?

Maybe someone of you that have allready released stuff can answer me a question :

How much does a artist pay for the artwork and the final print of the covers. I'm taking about the covers that are made in a offset machine and not self made with laser printers.

I'm trying to figure out how to drop the final cd cost for a release.

thanks in advance

Hmmm...I have released a few cd publications (as graphic designer) for different artists. I can tell you the price depends on many things:

- payment for artwork depends on what you want on cover (exclusively designed graphic or now made, etc. ) and is it regular or booklet for example.

- prepress cost - preparing of graphic project for print (usually included in print cost)

- print cost - the basic thing - how many copies > inlay/booklet/digi-pak, and details like paper, etc....

If you are able to pass me the details I can tell you more or less the final cost.

Heu yanik, thanks for your reply

I'm clear about the whole work caus i work my self as a graphic designer in my country.

My idee was to compare my final artwork+print cost with the one that is normaly payed if you let the label do that for you.

Let's say i wanna release a cd on a well known label

I'm not clear about the prices that make the final cost

Let's say the cd will cost 12 $ ok, and it will be 1000 copies with booklet

Now, how much does the label or who ever does that, ask's for it

I would like an aswer like : for a 12 $ cd the artwok+print cost is 3$ or whatever.

I hope I make my self clear.

thanks

The artist do indeed pay for the artwork since the artist payment of roaylties normally are after deduction of design, print, packaging and shipping.

It's quite normal that the price (payed by the label to the graphic artists) is around £. 1000 - 3000 and in some cases (major releases and bands) much more.

but the artist gets payed 1st for the musical material and then only gets royalties once the label makes their cash back...right???

if thats not how it works can you pls tell me how it works...as i would have never guessed that the artist has to take $ out of their own pocket to get the album released properly

That depend on the label, the artist and the agreement.

I personally have always been recieving advances but the advance will still be deducted in the end before recieving royalties the cost since the advance is the same as royalties.

So an artist do not litteraly take $ out of their own pockets but they do have to share some of the cost (agreed percentage in the agreemnet) payed by the label in advance to designers ect.

I doubt that many artists make a living from selling CD's.

Some few do but the majority make a living out of the bi-products such as DJ and live gigs (those who are popular enough to be invited).

So teh concluision is that those who make a living out of this scene are (in fixed chart order):

1. labels

2. Distributors

3. Promoters/Top Artists/bands (25-35% of all bands) and DJ's

I did not understand your T.i.P question?
