Long Shot for Big Music

Otto Matta

Recommended Posts

Okay, I often get frustrated by the psy scene because it doesn't get powerful or deep enough. I like the tech thing because it gives me the power I enjoy, but it can also be fairly dry. So I'm probing - it's a long shot - for recommendations for stuff (not psy) that has as many of the following elements as possible:

- electronic

- powerful

- serious!!!

- deep

- dark

- large!!!

- subtle

- interesting

- not highly repetetive

- not trying to be scary/horror, because that's silly

- synthetic

- emotive

- artful

- not too fast, not too slow

- has some variety, twists and turns

Gimme some giant, stomping, storming, raging electronic music that makes me feel.

Thanks. ;)

Tangerine Dream - Rubycon (part 1)

Play loud on headphones and it will meet all these requirements.

*This Morn' Omina (=Industrial/Tribal sort of music)...although I'm not sure...maybe too 'dark'

*VNV Nation (=EBM)...but also these might look too 'dark & silly' to you...

You should give them a try anyway.

Nah, you're asking the impossible Otto...  B)

Haha, I was about to say Front 242. They carry what you require, but off course perhaps not all in all tracks. Try some of the older stuff. Tyranny for you, Front by Front, and Official Version. Classix :)

Well, bligh me, just checked your list. Front 242 has all of that.

"Tyranny for you" is one of my favourites from them, worth a try indeed.

I used to own this album, actually. It was nice. Not quite raging, though. :)

uuhm ok so you want big stomping raging but not too fast and...subtle?

that's pretty hard

Speedy J - A Shocking Hobby ?

not that much melody and subtlety though

some sort of dark heavy drum 'n bass?

543076

I mean subtlety in terms of artness. Music with nuance and inventiveness. There are some close tracks on Timecode's Broken compilation. I'd also throw in Spirallianz as an example. But I was hoping there was something outside of this genre that was even bigger.

Richard Devine has quite a large sound, but his stuff is too frenzied, and I suspect Squarepusher's latest stuff is still pretty scattered, when I'd prefer something more stylized and functional for the ears and mind.

Any recommendations? Links?

How about Nuclear Ramjet "Mission to Sedna"?

543167

It's pretty music, but doesn't rage at all. Thanks, though, I've been curious about that album.

Nope. It's like a faster version of standard psy, with a club sound thrown in. It has speed but it doesn't have power. Thanks for the link, though.

I'm not looking for trance beats with acid. I've got enough psy music.

Okay, another track that is close to what I'm looking for is Delta's Pop or Def by Delta, Part 2. But now I want bigger, harder, with more detail, and not necessarily a 4x4 beat. (I know this is tough, but I thought I'd try.)

How about some hardcore?

One of my all time favorites is Nordcore. Check it out at http://www.nordcore.de/

Their sound is very powerful, but not in a Rotterdam overdone kind of way. This is true dark, underground horror core with a lot of detail and psychedelic riffs that at times may appeal to a psyhead. I absolutely love the dark and scary atmosphere they create. I haven't heard their newer stuff but I bet it's just as good as older.
