turntables?

hey all!

i'm planning to buy turntables to listen to the stuff that is only available on vinyl ( and to listen to old lps of my parents:).

please give me your opinions on what i should buy. i don't want to spend that much on it, only ca 100 eur/ $, so it doesn't have to be a top notch high-tekk gadget, only a good sounding machine. ahh and yes i don't want to dj with it, only play music. so please tell me, what you think i should buy. (maybe also some turntables that are more expensive but that i could get used on ebay)

thanks in advance psyfi

For less then 150 Euro, you get sh1t.

I would go for the cheapest technics, the SL-BD20D.

Around 170€

If you want a cheap turntable for use with newer records then this is a decent deal, but if you want to play your old dusty vinyls then I would save some cash for a better one.

If you want to digitize your vinyls, you'll need an extra preamp.

hi.. i'm a big vinyl fanatic and been into this for a number of years now... i STILL use the very first turntables i ever bought - gemini xl-400s that i netted for $125 (canadian) with a needle... thats basically like 80 euro (for both). i've been completely satisfied with them - and if you aren't even going to really spin them, you definatly dont need more. spend the extra cash you save from not getting over-expensive super-hyped 1200s and buy QUALITY NEEDLES instead! i recommend ortofon concordes - the "nightclub" line, a misnomer if you ask me, is of good quality and can be somewhat affordable...

although if you plan on using it for some years then by all means, go with some 1200s - they are very well made (i just dont ever find that they're worth the $700 new, and used you save maybe a hundred, so whats the use)... of course, deals can be found everywhere if you hunt hard enough, and maybe in your area of the world the prices aren't so ridiculously hyped up... good luck!

hehe, funny that you mention those xl400's because i just saw them on ebay. the are apparently 1200 "fakes", so they are quite good, i suppose?

any more opinions?

btw: why would i nedd 1200 (or a pitch for that matter) if i don't want to spin anyway? i really just want to listen to music. and as the rest of may system isn't that good, too, buying 1200 would be unnecessary, i think

or what about gemini xl 500 or 500 II. are they any good?

or just tell me which technics player you would recommend for home listening, no matter how expensive they are, as there are a f#cking lot of technics on ebay and i think i can find something good there. but i don't have any knowledge, so i need your advice.

does it all realy matter that much?

i ask this because i just recently got back into vinyl, i was a vinyl addict years back collecting hardcore vinyl, digged them up listen to them (just for fun mostly although some titles still are nice) and bought some goa vinyls which i plan to do some more (i just love vinyl i don't know why!).

i play them on a crappy turntable and i was planning to buy a better one secondhand.

the thing is i see most of you saying you nedd big expensive turntables, while a friend of mine who stills DJ's harcore like a maniac uses just two cheap ass pitchable turntables and he seems completly saticfied!

So are all of you a bit too hyped up about these technics or am i overseeing something?

Hi psyfi!

I got two Gemini XL 500II and I would recommend you'd buy some Technics instead. Not that they're good, but they're not so strong and solid, and there's lots of flaws... like the power, which makes the pitch unsteady at all times. One of my turntables pitches down to another pitch-leve when I try to beatmix, sooo... go for the Technics!

if all you want to do i just listen and not mix then just buy a cheap turntable from a secondhand store and buy a new stylus for it.

dont know where you live but where i live a NEW turntable just suited for home listening is hard to come by.

plenty of new expensive ones like the 1200s though:)
