exotic
Horror Place - Hobyah 1. Nippers In the Orchard 2. Melsh Dick 3. Killer Clowns 4. Spunkies 5. A Small Pan Or a Slide Panic 6. Pot Pixie 7. Buttered Toast 8. Owling Byrrd 9. Mystic Heads 10. Computer Glitch Hobyah is a debut album of Horror Place, already well known among extreme psychedelic music lovers . The man behind it is dj Alex ZIK from Thessaloniki (Greece) who is also responsible for Adrenal Glands and Matutero projects. The concept of the album is to deliver to the audience a feeling of intense trip into darkest corners of subconsciousness for better understanding of human nature and fears. Mind wrenching psychedelia ! Review: 1# Nippers in the Dark For an intro that lasts about two minutes twenty four seconds approx it does its job well in introducing to us what lies ahead. I wanna play a game, what you have to do is sit here and talk to me .This is normal psy-fy fare with a well rounded bassline and blood curling samples setting an appropriate tone for the rest to follow. 2# Melsh dick Now you might say i'm kinda like satan, i'm so many different faces at once .. and that would be like satan ..he's very sharp.. in the underworld (???) .. i'm not doing all kinds of different things .. In the name of the lord if there was such a thing , would you be the devil? . Yes we have entered the devil's territory , smack crackle pop and i find myself swimming in a sea of psychedelia. except for the stupid fucking people who got shit stuck up their ass .I dig the choice of samples which merge well in equanimity with the rioting of beats thats taking place. 5'10 everything picks up pace ,all sorts of creepy crawlies come to life , 6'23 its trademark* Horror Place swirling and swooshing all over. I'm looking for more ! 3# Killer Clowns Horror unspeakable .. till the day i die .. forget that faith.. . Sample from Stephen King's 'IT' ?? Getting down to brass tax a.s.a.p the general atmosphere lurks with haunting apprehension. Howling synths pick up menacing pace around the 2'33 mark, twists and turns in the bass and again we've reached unchartered territory. Whistle .. killer clowns .. outer space.. holy shit 4'07 the base is more tight and I see this heading somewhere, manipulated spaces come and go , growl baby growl the meltdown has begun , all ending in a crescendo of clowning horror. Yammy !! 4# Spunkies In a deep dark tunnel somewhere in the centre of the earth there is called a meeting. The attendees come from their respective hideouts, announcing their arrival in no uncertain terms. All the animals are all divided from the people of the ?? Gruesome fx's , synthesizing and carelessly farting , finally culminating in a gamut of putrid hopelessness. Ewwww.. 5# A small pan or slide panic The trumpetting that greets us first sets the tone for an ominous ride this wretched piece of music is gonna take us through. A quickly paced clock ticks away. the synth and fx's unfold in a grumpy slap dash manner. The trumpetting is crying for help. Beneath the pounding there is an subliminal layer of impending doom. The conglomerate of sounds create a perfect atmoshere of mideval ritual.. someone help me . Wooosshhh!! 6# Pot Pixie The rumbling begins soon after joined by the howling of battery. A swarm of bee like mosnters enters uninvited. The chase is on , the hunter becomes the hunted. the bassline is most impressive among the various 'other worldly' soundscapes. The fx's used in the latter two minutes are spell binding inducing a feeling a invarialble destruction. Pheww !! 7# Butterred toast Spread it all over the crunchy toast goddammit, that juicy butter reeking of hellishly sublime aftertaste ! Enter sandman , enter shaman , enter all you wretched creatures demanding a little bite of the srcumptious pie laced with rotten tomatoes. And what are they gonna have this with ? Tasty grotesque buttered toast. Yeah!! Rumble, bumble jumble and the pie is over and done with. Damn !! 8# Owling byrrd Outsiders call it pale (??) , .. a tribe in western mexico call it (??) . Some bird ?? Is that the motif here. It comes and feeds of unassuming littles who are caught off guard. The nocturnal prey bird with a large and hooked beak is the theme of this eerie ghostly anthem driven by the pounding Horror Place's ghastly exhortations. Call it bad karma or nature's blind fury it's coming to get ya! Unrelenting track to say the least ! 9# Mystic Heads Mysticism, Voodoo and witch craft! Spinning gnostic tales of the after world is undeniably our man's forte. Where have i heard the like of this before ? Ghreg on earth comes to my mind immediately. The comparison is inevitable here but what is noteworthy and sets Horror place apart is he manages to do the trick without relying too much on his bass skills. Impressive ! 10# Computer Glitch There's bound to some Glitch in the hardware after all that's been churned out ... A distorted voice mumbling mumbo jumbo quickly disappears making way for hedonistic cacophany at its best !! A lot of groove is hidden behind the screeching overwheling Fx's. Ha Ha and i absolutely dig the way he ends this epic dark saga. Closing comment : After having witnessed a live act of horror place here in india i was really excited to review this cd. Its uniquely hard fast deep driving entrancing Psychedelic Dark mu-sick. If you're into delving deep into your subconscious this is what you're looking for ! zaib
well, this could have been a very nice album - i love horror place's tune on va - phenix, for instance - full of crispy'n freaky noises, but unfortunately there's just too much bass covering it all
alleycat
I thought the same on the first few listens. Sometimes when I mix songs off this album, I instantly want to change it, or stop mixing for some reason. But after some hard long-drive listening I hear more and more to like about Horror Place. I do think that it may not be Zik's best work but its definitely unique. Where else have you heard Charles Manson in trance? And those basslines that sound kinda cheezy at first but then you have so much fun dancing to them, they're like good b-rate horror movies from the 80s. Horror Place is the Troma of trance! Gutty
the samples of all the tracks sound very similar. like he used the same kick/bass synth for every tune. Other than that it sounds pretty cool, especially no.

andonis
the samples of all the tracks sound very similar. like he used the same kick/bass synth for every tune. 599793[/snapback] That is true and is the main handicap of this album. Other than that it is a solid and heavy darkpsy dancefloor orientated release unique in it's style.

Rotwang
The other day I was listening to this while my housemate was fast forwarding through a Russ Meyer film we had recorded on a HDD recorder, in order to get to the good bits. The change of frame synced up almost perfectly with the beat of the music. It was great.

Hasn't aged well in my ears... Hmm. I don't feel the urge to listen to this very often either, but when I do I generally enjoy it more than I expect to.
