Guest TjT
This limited edition thing is bullshit. I mean only 500 copies??? They will surely do a repress or something cause they can sell a lot more than that. I think its just to build up the hype a little. Anybody know about the tracklisting?
Guest spacemonkey - 604
i find it strange too. this way there are lots of people that have to miss out on it. and if it is even remotely like both albums it wil sell big time. this means he can make money with sometime good, make people happy with more shpongle instead of just printed 500 copies. it makes no sense.l
Guest Jikkenteki
I think the 500 limited copies might very well be more of a statement on how few people are actually buying music these days. Consider that the vinyl pressings of "Are You Shpongled" and repressing of "Twisted" were limited to 1000 and STILL are available for sale a full year and a half after I first noticed them up for sale. You would think both of those would have sold out in minutes, but alas they are still there....
Guest bugbread
Yeah, but I'm sure a good portion of that is that most DJs now use CD, not vinyl. At least, pretty much every party I go to the DJs use CDs.
Guest Jikkenteki
True, but both those guys were released before the CD boom, as I like to call it. From what I have seen, at least in Japan, up until about a year ago vinyl was still very common at psy-parties (at least in the Kansai area) and cds, while still being used, were only used maybe 1/3 of the time (two years ago I can only rarely recall seeing CDs in use at all). The CD and CD only trend seems to be fairly new (a few of my friends over there have mentioned that it seems to be in the last six months or so that it has really blown up). Yup until I left to finish school, the only DJ I can recall seeing use no vinyl at all was Domino who didn't use CDs either (all DAT). Back here in America the use of CDJ units is still VERY frowned upon in most circles, but I'm drifting off topic here so.... I still think that distribution is the biggest problem overall. The local record shops here can get damn near anything in any genre except psy-trance. There simply aren't that many major distributors carrying it. Guest bugbread
Ok, good point. And pretty damn educational, too! As for the Tokyo area, CDs have been the mainstream in psy for a good long time now. I didn't used to pay attention to what media DJs were using, but for about 2 years now CDs have been the main for psy. Then again, this is very probably because there are a lot of foreign artists/DJs in Tokyo parties, and for them CDs are easier to carry. It's just a guess, but I can't remember seeing ANY foreign artists using vinyl in over a year at least. For non-psy, though, the story is totally different. Vinyl is especially popular with house DJs. Which, of course, makes it both amusing and poignant that Tsuyoshi pretty much only uses vinyl. I'm sure it's because he's used to it, but it just makes him look as much of a house DJ as he sounds. Still, now that you mention it, the idea that the DJ booth doesn't even have turntables seems to be a recent shift. Sorry, a little off-topic. Guest Jikkenteki
Weird, the majority of the foreign DJs I have seen in Osaka and Kyoto were doing vinyl. Do I perhaps sense a bit of the Kansai versus Kanto thing at work here again??? Personally my biggest issue right now is figuring out how to get all my vinyl to Japan when I move back next year. Including my Shpongle vinyl.... to big things back on topic. BTW - I finally started remixing your track last night. Well see where this goes, but I have a feeling it is headin towards the harder side of things....
Guest bugbread
Well, since we're taking over the thread, might as well make it official Hmm, it may be a Kansai / Kanto thing. The more I think about it, the more I remember DJs "disappearing" (bending over to reach into their vinyl box) back in the old days. I may be a bit off with my 2 year comment, but for at least a year and a half now I don't see DJs disappear at psy shows. It could just be the kind of DJs I like or tend to watch, though. I'm not very much into minimal / prog, so I don't know if those DJs use CD or vinyl more, or if there is even any difference. Plus, for the last year or so, I've been going to more odd (Loopus in Fabula, etc.) shows, so I may not be looking at the "typical". Regarding my track: The weirdest thing I noticed after digging out the original samples I used in the track is that one of them is of somebody (I don't know who, maybe me) saying "Pajama". What that was doing in a serious sounding track I have no idea. I wish I could remember what the hell I was thinking.
Guest Jikkenteki
Weird samples just happen sometimes. For some reason my most recently finished track is by far one of the best things I have done to date, but features samples of Nakatani Miki saying "Chinko tte nan desu ka?". Most people can't understand Japanese so they just assume it is something alot more meaningful than it really is..... and um, yeah, sometimes those kind of samples end up on Shpongle tracks..... (tolken effort to stay on topic).
Guest bugbread
Jikkenteki: I would LOVE for that to be played at a Japanese party. I'd by rolling on the floor laughing. Yet, I would not roll on the floor laughing if Shpongle did another live show in Tokyo! (Another token effort to stay on topic)
