Diference between goa and psy?

Psy is a poor man's EBM (a la Front 242) or a bastardized form of techno, while goa is psychedelic music for the modern world. Typically, the former is "minimal" (aka, simplistic) and beat-based, while the latter contains (one would hope) unique melodies, lots of tweaky sounds, and gives you a feeling of having gone somewhere over the course of a track or album. That is my short, unbiased overview of the distinction between psy and goa. :P

agree with electric sheep for the most part...but for a better picture:

Goa ~ Cosmosis (generally stuff before 98/99)

Psy ~ Infected Mushroom (stuff after the above date)

and its high time for a "Goa" revival don't ya think?

but thats just my personal view:)

For me it Psy is just the next logical step of Goa.

If you listen carefully to the new releases of most of the Full on artists you will se that they are still Goa, just better. Maybe sometimes we are missing those melodies but the structure is pretty much the same.

As about the minimal or progressive psy, well that's just a different point of view with tech influences.

Goa was the name given in the very early days, cos that was where the music originated from. By the time I got into it ('94/'95) it was being called Psytrance already. Basically the only people that used to call it goatrance were the ones that had been there.

Its quite funny cos I remember that when the english music press "discovered" this sort of music they were calling it psytrance; but when they decided it wasn't cool enough for them, or able to make them very much money, they went to calling it goatrance cos it was more easy to take the piss out of. =o)

Well goa is the fist form of psytrance: full-on, melodic, emotional etc. There still are tracks like that, just more envolved, more complex and psychedelic, that's psytrance. Minimal is another form much more progressive and different. You just can't compare psy and minimal...

I think Slidingtrancer is right, that sounds more like a better way of putting it... Psychedelic Trance is more FX oriented, and Goa is more Melodic oriented... But both are still Psychedelic... :) hehe, hope I didnt confuse anyone... lol, That's what I think... :0)

Here is my humble attempt to put things in perspective:

Back in 1996-97, everything was called Goa. Since then, the music has evolved considerably and is generally known under the umbrella term psychedelic trance. Attempts to evolve the sound have generally come through improvements in the technology used by the artists as well as the combination of trance elements with techno and/or progressive house.

Full-on is probably the closest to the original Goa Trance sound, i.e. Infected Mushroom, Hallucinogen, etc.

Progressive psy trance is a term generally used for the Scandinavian sounds and is generally a mixture of progressive house, techno, and psy trance. Good examples come from labels such as Digital Structures, Tatsu, etc, Plusquam.

Tech-trance is combination of psy trance and techno, for example the new X-Dream stuff, Spirallianz, Midimiliz, Authentik, etc.

There's also tech-house, which as the name suggest combines techno and house. Example, MPDQX's Baluns label.

I have seen people on this board and elsewhere insinuate that progressive psy trance is less psychedelic than full-on, which is, excuse my language bullshit. First of all, no one can give a satisfactory definition of the term "psychedelic" as used in this context. Or at least not one that two independent observers will agree on.

I think these terms should be used to locate a particular artist within the psychedelic trance space, but to use them as a veil for one's personal preferences is just destructive. The psy trance scene is too fragile to need divisions like that!

peace to all!

They're one and they same. People stopped saying "Goa" because "Psy" has a cooler sound to it, hence the term "goatrance" became "psytrance".

The real difference is that between the melodic psytrance and the minimal psytrance and all the styles between and around those two. Too much style descriptions just mess things up...

Diference what I feel between Goa and Psy is that Goa have more melodies than a Psy,but is still Psychedelic like Psy-Trance. I dont now how long you been listening to Psy-Goa Trance, but after a while probably that feeling would came to you and you gonna start feeling that " diference"... Enjoy.....(-:
