Guest Para
I know ill get burnt for this topic but this is the problem i face: I have a good collection for my sets but sometimes i really really need to play an MP3 that ive downloaded but im afraid it may sound crap on a decent sound system. My point is i don't want to buy a whole compilation or Album where im only going to use one or two tracks on it. Id rather save my money for a CD where i like at least 4 tracks. There is so much out there to collect so wat advice from personnel experience would you guyz give in terms of using downloaded Mp3s once or twice in ur sets??. Would it be alright if most my MP3s i wanted to use are at least 192 bitrate up? I know this is a common problem for many others as well, so please help if u can. Thankx. Guest Para
one more thing, what if u convert the MP3 back to wav format and burn onto CD, is it close to having the quality of the original CD then?
Guest liarliar
No, i dont think so. As long as it has been mp3 the quality is decently reduced. And converting it to wav won't make it good again.
Guest Hallucinogenious
use them with higher than 192kbit quality. It might sound like shit in the sound system. With cds you dont have such a problem. The cd-sound is more *clear* . Test how the crossfading from a cd to a mp3 song sounds (in the quality of sound) before using mp3s. Guest Jikkenteki
I briefly experimented with using both mp3s and mp3s burned to cds in DJ sets a couple years back (all legitimately gained from cds I own I might add) and the results where such that I swore I would never do it again. The difference between the two is very drastic when you compare them back to back. I can tell even on my car stereo, much less a big club system. The louder the volume gets, the more apparent the difference between mp3 and cd/vinyl becomes. Flat, muddy, no life. Its like someone suddenly covered your ears. The problem with mp3s is that how they assume the human ear processes what sounds it hears and doesn't hear (and hence what to cut out when encoding it) is a generalization and different people process sound differently, so even if one person doesn't notice any major change (few and far between), to someone else's ears it will be a drastic difference. Guest TjT
I would have thought that if you wanted to gain/maintain a reputation as a decent DJ then the quality of your 'sound' is of paramount importance. But if your playing at a party in the mountains of Manali then i think its fair enough to use them but at any 'professional' gig then I wouldn't even consider it. Guest Saru
You should be fucking shot for even considering using MP3s as a medium for DJing with-I wouldn't even use an MD and I sometimes don't even like the quality of a copied Cds-Digitally recorded DAT still has the best sound by far. MP3 is for sampling the sound of music only and for home use only!

Basilisk
maybe 1 out of 100 people who use mp3 to dj would write a topic like this... just a guess, but i know it is widespread. hopefully promoters and party people will be aware enough of the issue to put a stop to this where possible. Guest Rush
please forgive my ignorance, but unless you've got some funky vinyl writer or a CDJ, how can u dj with mp3s??
Guest cliff
@rush: you can burn the mp3s on a cd (the burning software converts the mp3 back to wave and then burns it as audio). in fact no one can distinguish between an audio cd and good ripped mp3s > 256 kbit, several tests were made with people who are able to hear extreme high frequencies(and others like music producers..). these tests were made in studios with the best equipment around. at 192 kbit the difference could be heard by some of the attendees, but they could only tell that they are different, they couldnt even tell which one is better... and at 256kbit as mentioned above they couldnt even tell the difference. so anyone who says he can hear the difference on a "normal" sound system, is joking, or he has low quality mp3s, which is a common problem, because most mp3s floating around on the inet arent good, thanks to xing and other bad rippers/codecs.
