So, here is the deal:

You make a track out of the following tools, and post it here. A selected group of people will then vote on the best track or something. That to be discussed still:

You can use:

Synths:

http://www.geocities.jp/daichi1969/softsynth/synth1v107.zip

Percussion packs:

http://www.nanorecords.co.uk/uploaded_file...-packs/kit1.zip

http://www.nanorecords.co.uk/uploaded_file...-packs/kit2.zip

....using the drum sampler of your choice, and/or maybe for flavor add this freeware sampler

Effects:

Happy producing!

It's a bit vague I think. It would have been more simple if we were given a sample pack.

Like a tracker compo :)

Or at least we've been given a preset pack for a few free vstis.

Hmmm, maybe thats also an idea, to limit it.... also sounds cool. So how are we going to do that? :)

Make a few presets for synth1 and throw together a few samples?

Or, we could have a synth1 compo ... See who can make a track using only synth. Using it for percussion, bassline, synths and effects? :)

I like the idea, but have been busy finishing a track already. That said, I just finished it so this might be a nice no pressure challenge before going on to the next track.

Limiting it might be an interesting challenge too. For percussion samples, you could, for example, limit it to the Nano Records free percussion sample pack. Then maybe pick either a few couple synths (Vanguard, Albino, etc) or else limit it to some commonly available free synths so everyone starts on equal footing (Synth 1 and a few others come to mind).

tbh, most of my tracks are "preset" tracks :P

even though most of the time the presets sound nothing like the outcome.. but still :P

Actually I like the one synth only idea as well (Synth 1 actually seems like a good canidate too). Maybe Synth 1 and a limited set of percussion samples?

To to make it a bit challenging, use Synth1 for percussion? :)

How about, each participant can submit ONE bassdrum, ONE hihat, ONE Snare, ONE clap... and ONE loop. Then we make a zip, and Synth1 is the only synth to be used.

What about effects?

It'd be more challenging yes, but perhaps too much so for some people. Having absolutely everything including percussion on the same synth is perhaps maybe venturing a little to close to "synth demo" land for my taste, and I rarely hear much that is really good in that department. At least by having a solid set of percussion samples (again the free nano one's seem like a good choice to me) everyone starts off with a solid base in that department and then can focus on the synth for more "synth" like endevours?

Delay and such?

Yeah, because I mean, we could say you can only use the ones that are builtin in SX or whatever, but then again, everyone doesnt use SX... so should we say the ones built into your sequencer? Also, reason users will not be able to participate :(

Its drifted a bit from the original preset only idea, but I think this way will probably yield better results musically and be a better learning experience for the artists in involved.

Of course, my initial post was a bit wide, and I am glad that people feeel like altering the rules and the way we should do it :)
