pixiejanet
I have been into Psy since about 1996 and still love it...But.....why is it that i rarely hear any tune twice? Has DJing become so competetive that only the newest of new will be played, god forbid that anyone has played it before!! I was chatting to someone about dancefloor `politics` and it seems that the trend isnt about those on the dancefloor any more.... I love hearing lots of music in a variety of styles in a club..and i absolutely LOVE hearing familiar tunes..so do many of the folks i hang out with..., yet it seems that the DJs have the say and not those who are paying the money to go to the clubs! Kulu/Bradford recently did an old school Goa set on the middle floor...the main floor and the chill were empty..Everyone was on the middle floor...doesn`t that say something???? One of the best sets i have heard recently was a young lass at Cabbage who played everything from techno to trance, Acid to Goa and back again....It was so much fun and she had that floor rocking...Oh to hear more of that...!! Whinge over.....PJ.xxx

If the track is good, its good, and its the way YOU play and present it in the end that matters, and not that its the same track. However, if you only have the same tracks as the previous dj, you pretty much are not going to sound "genuine" and the party would become boring... Wouldnt you agree Ms Janet? I understand that it is a difficult task you have, but every DJ must have some `classics` that they like..individual to them...yet i hardly ever here anything but `new skool` for want of a better term.....and just now the parties are going very `prog` which is a style that can become a little `tedious`...... i suppose i can listen to all my faves at home, but they sound so good out there on the dance floor....! RTP
But.....why is it that i rarely hear any tune twice? Has DJing become so competetive that only the newest of new will be played, god forbid that anyone has played it before!!Do you mean hearing a tune twice on the same evening? On the same evening I actually wouldn't want to hear any tune twice. What has been played, has been played - no need to hear it again, give me something new instead! And fortunately until now I never have heard a tune twice on one evening. A tune played twice on two seperate evenings I have nothing against. But on the same evening it's a no for me... pr0fane
I think as a DJ you need to find a balance, so you don't just play all those tunes everybody have heard to death (seriously, where is the challenge in that?), but on the other hand doesn't get too focused on the whole competition to play the latest "unreleased killarghs". As long as you stay true to yourself and play tunes you love of course

No i dont mean twice in the same evening, i mean, you hear a track once and never ever again.....always brand new stuff...which is fine...i suppose. I have spoken to DJs i know and they wont play anything they have played before, what a waste of good music...IMO Seems moreso in the trance world than any other kind of music...I like hearing new and old mixed up on the same night...there`s nothing like a familiar tune to pull people on the dancefloor...! Well, yes, you're quite right ... although there are some tracks which I remember having heard way more than once. Back in the days it was S-Range's "Test Tones" ... and as I finally had the track I was going "aaah, now THAT is this one I like so much " And also nowadays I recognize some songs played more than once. Magnetrixx' "Zipfel" was one of them. And also some other fullon ones ... I recognize them because of the samples.
D3lirious
Shrug... Anyone remember Sonica? That one IM song with lyrics was played atleast 124 times
Basilisk
This is nothing new... the rift between DJs and the audience has been wide for many years now. Newness is a quality cherished by the upper elite far more than casual listeners, fans, and dancers out on the floor. Guys like me who try to pay attention to it all, from 1993 straight up to the current day, seem to get left in the dirt by not aligning strictly with the "latest and greatest," whatever that might be with every passing moment. That's just how it is in most places...

moni
I remember being in a festival, dancing, drinking. I stopped to chat to somebody when a Benefactor track got played. I was like WOW, first familiar track in this party. And stopped chatting and went to dance. It was perfect. Then last summer, at Ozora, i was laying in the grass, listening to a DJ spinning prog trance. At some point, she put a Tegma track, from the "Around the world in 80 mins" album. It didn't seem to fit with the previous track, and ruined the flow for me. But the Tegma track is good, i like the whole album. Then Peter Didjital spinned and at some point he put Zen Mechanics - Environmental Porn, and i stopped dancing cause something was bugging me: I know this track but who's track is it? The name was sitting on the tip of my tongue, but couldn't quite say it. It was a bit annoying for a few seconds. It's a bit tricky.
abasio
Unlike the D&B scene where top DJs (at least when I've seen them) play the same track twice in a row just because they can't mix
