Mike A
A Dual-Core CPU is a must. You won't get far with a P4. Either AMD X2 or Intel Core 2 Duo (better, but costs more). And don't waste money on that Creative sound card. Get a 2nd hand semi-pro one, for proper ASIO performance.
Malevol3nt
hello, ive been released from the army and i have desided to create music. Ultra_FoX
ok, did a few changes and ended up spending a bit less so here it is: Pentium D 2.8Ghz, s775, 2x2MB, DualCore (915) FOXCONN P4M800P7MA-RS2 s775, DDRII, AGP SODIMM Kingston 1GB 667Mhz DDRII Western Digital 250GB 7200RPM, 16MB, SATA II ATI 9600XT 256MB, TV, DVI CREATIVE X-Fi Fatal1ty + 5.25 + Remote LG DVD±RW GSA-H22NB x18, DL x8 Vertigo-2 MIDI 400W Silver im not sure about the sound card because my cousin said he had one that work for 3 years and that i should get a brand new, if you know otherwise and also know where i can get a second hand one please tell me. thank you very much for helping me
NEMO.BOFH
Hmm, Pentium D really let me down, I'd still suggest a Core 2 Duo system m8! Or as Mike_A said, the AMD X2.. but I have no experiences in that architecture, I am a proud Intel whore AMD X2 works really fine for me. Only MAC experience with the Core 2 Duo though, so I couldnt tell
NEMO.BOFH
I can imagine it works awesome with mac! I changed from Pentium D to Core2Duo, the difference was extreme.. especially when it comes to audio processing. Hey, do you use Cubase? I have this weird problem with SX3 that the processor tells me that its all exhausted (2 vsts running) but I can add and add and add and nothing happens to the performance itself, the meter is just maxed. I am thinking it has to do with the X2, that it reads it wrong or something...
Reznik
buy core2duo as suggested, 2 gigs ram, sata hdd, and a decent soundcard (maybe 2nd hand), check out other threads for which soundcard to choose.
slyman604
i would say the biggest thing is to find a good card and then make sure it will be rock solid with your cpu/motherboard. a used audiophile is probly the way to go for a nice beginner sound card. i wouldnt worry that much about speed, i have a p4 2.8ghz, its plenty fast enough. This should be fine for making music. I had a much worse system for most of what I made. For the soundcard, I recommend an old Delta-66, its what I use and its clean. There are probably better soundcards, but you pay a high price. Look on ebay for the soundcard.

That's a pic of a delta 66, what I have. 4 analogue in/outs + 2 digital. It is a great card. I paid over $400 many years ago, now you can get them for less then 100. w_lizzard
Well I admit I admit I will buy a new MAC PowerBook for my music making. I will leave my current PC to my family as my sister and her husband, and my brother sometimes need it for their work.
