11. We No Longer Need Ourselves

Well it's a long time since the release date and I've finally gotten around to reviewing Tryshasla. Reviewing this album after one listen would not do it justice. Since recieving the stunning package via SO (it really is - the artwork is a treat) I've played this at home, walked with it in the woods, spun it on the motorway, listened to it before bed, woke up with it, brought it just about anywhere.

So let's break it down, track by track.

1. Hospital Requiem

Where've you been? - Let me go - Friend?

Paranoid City opens up the album, with harsh drones eventually merging into a soft, lullaby like melody. Soft pads, bleeps, technological noise and drones fill the space. As an opener it's technically excellent, but this one doesn't attract many rotations on my iPod. I find the first few minutes a little difficult to listen to compared to the rest. Solid album opener however, and a great piece of ambient.

2. Foliage Pathway

Foliage Pathway is a lot lighter track which is seamlessly mixed in from the last - but at the same time nothing is cut out so that it's easy to spin in your DJ set. This also is a very nice beatless ambient piece which starts off with subtle pads, then a melody which 'attracts' all the other elements in the piece to come forward, bringing up the volume. Again, extremely sample heavy, lush and amazing. There's so many layers here that picking them apart after even heavy listening is difficult.

You could compare this to for example Future Sound Of London - after the 'main' piece ends, there's some sort of melody which comes as a little interlude between the next track. This one is played on a glockenspiel, with piano and then boat rowing sound effects. Smooth.

3. Leraine (featuring Kettel)

Well this is the track that led me to buy the album - starting off with a windy sample and the melody filtered through a low pass filter. More samples litter this part of the piece, but it's entirely melody driven. Eventually the filter cutoff is released and we get a huge bassline and hiphop like drums. The effect is awesome.

Production again here is top notch and as slick as a bucketful of oil. There's so much variation too, and even though the track runs for almost 8 minutes, it doesn't seem like it! Again, we have a beautiful interlude played on some type of synthesiser, it's a filtered pad chord sequence. Very melancholic. Superb track.

4. The Realms Of Sanda

Skin burns - The world's coming to an end.

This is another great ambient piece. Starts off with what sounds like a busy arcade setting but after a while we do get pads! Again, Lennard has treated us to a huge collection of samples, picturing Sanda in vivid colours. I love the subtle use of the piano here - sounds almost like another synthesiser, but not quite.

It's perhaps a little hard to describe this piece, you have to hear it to appreciate it. The girl's voice at the end is incredibly sexy with just a hint of melancholy. I love the little baby squeal at the end, cute!

5. The King Of Sanda

This tune is a very descriptive piece. It sounds like you're in a king's castle - which obviously was the point. It's not so much a track you could easily mix as it's just part of the album - it helps to convey the story. And being only 2 minutes it's over pretty fast.

So you have monks chanting, brass, a slow steady jazz backing with double bass and generally a lovely piece of music. Thumbs up.

6. Born In A Tropical Swamp

Well I bought the album for Leraine, but this track really is the icing on the cake. It's immaculately produced, with monks chanting in the beginning, soft pads and vinyl noise. A beat comes in which is layered with another beat until the main beat comes in. Slow and steady.

The track picks up pace midway through, with no change in tempo - but nice melody again played by glockenspiels. The real cream here is right at the end where the drums fade out and some luscious, thick pads take the main chord sequence and turn it into something special - beautiful even. Probably my favourite moment in the album. We then get a short conversation extract which is heavily processed and reverbed - but it fits perfectly. Amazing track - worth the purchase for this alone!

7. Kingdom Of Hearts

I didn't use to like this track, to be honest. But it really has grown on me - it's very melancholic with some kind of synthesised choir. It can make you cry if you're in that mood - it feels like you've just lost someone. In addition to the synthesised pads we get some strings which build up to a climax which has reduced me to tears sometimes. Or if not that, I get a very teary feeling.

Fantastic tune, it really is. *sniff*

8. Friday Fall

In stark constrast to the previous composition, this is a very happy, bouncy, almost drum and bass style piece of music. There's a lot going on here, with some cool acoustic guitar lines. It's a testament to the talent of Lennard - who seems to be able to produce nearly any style of music. I would also consider it a wake up call to producers out there - you don't have to repeat the same style on an album for it to be great.

9. Terata

Terata starts off on the piano, but doesn't linger there - soft pads fade in and this is another treat - a fantastic piece of beatless ambient. Well, almost. There's a sort of percussion loop that sounds like the train from the pictures in the album booklet. It's not that long though and may leave you wanting more!

10. Shrine

Again, this start off on the piano but we get a lovely little melody here, accompanied by crickets and insects of different varieties. The absolute beauty of this track is when the piano cuts out at the end - turn up your speakers as this next bit is very soft and and heartbreaking. Extremely faint chords in the background which are incredibly beautiful. It's just a heart melter. Stunning composition.

11. We No Longer Need Ourselves

This track sums up the album really. It's more positive than Shrine, with kids screaming in the background - and to close, a train passing by in the background. Though it's a little short and you might feel cheated out of a proper length track. However it's a lovely end to the album, and rounds everything up perfectly.

So the album draws to a close, again. For at least the 50th time. This album is so good that it pains me to think that only 1,500 copies were pressed - including a reprint of 500 copies! It's a classic in every sense of the word - you could easily have it up there with Lifeforms - it has so many different styles of music fused into a very unique package, with some definite Secede stamp. This guy definitely has talent.

For me what this album does is bring me happiness, sadness, joy, and frustration at the fact that it's just over 50 minutes - the sign of it being good though is that I want more. But I am pleased that the tracks are this good rather than being a 70 minute album with some mediocre tracks thrown in. Every track here is amazing in it's own right.

And I can't say this about many of my albums.

Favourites: 2, 3 (!!!), 4, 5 (!), 6 (!!!!), 7 (!!), 8, 9 (!), 10 (!!!)

Note: At the time of writing Tryshasla is out of print at Sending Orbs. Badger them enough and they might hopefully reprint it. Everyone who likes ambient should listen to this album.

Brilliance! I've been trying everywhere to get my hands on this album... not even the recordstores here have any copies left. Bastards. They desperately need to reprint this. Leraine is an instant classic, wonderful song indeed, nice collabo with Kettel. But man, I really can't get enough of this album. Really organic and touching piece of art. Just lovely. :)

They took one reprint (500) on this once. I doubt there will be another one. I borrowed my copy to a friend, I hope to get it back :o I'm still waiting for my new Secede EP.

Hmm ... I really SHOULD open my sealed copy one of these days. But I've heard the other SO releases and found that they only really get to me when I'm either really stoned or looking for music that sounds like nothing else I have.

Not sure what to do. But reviews everywhere praise this baby like crazy. Oh well, guess I'll live with it :P

Without a doubt one of the greatest albums ever made!

I have listened to it a great number of times & I still want to listen to it all the time.

It is the only CD I have ever bought an extra copy for so my girlfriend can know the utter sublimeness of real music

All tracks are at least very good

but

1. Hospital Requiem,3. Leraine, 6. Born In A Tropical Swamp, 8. Friday Fall & 10. Shrine are the best when hear separately. To fully enjoy though this should be listened to fully as an album

I initially bought this album on the strength of Leraine (a collaboration with Kettel) but I was disappointed & didn't listen to it again for a long time.

Stupid Stupid Stupid that's what I was. Plain Stupid!!! Although this is what usually happens with me, with this album I can't help but feel like I've missed out on a few months of pure joy just becasue I didn't pay enough attention to it the first time round. As when I gave this another try, this time alone & undistracted in bed it just blew me away. Since then I have listened to it again & again & again and I still discover new intricacies as well as more fully understanding the big picture. If it was a woman I'd try to take it to bed. I'd want to marry it & give it half my stuff. I just hope (& I'm pretty sure it wont happen) that I wont get bored of this in the future after listening to it too much & want to get a divorce & send it packing!

Anyway the story is about a dying man & his journey through the afterlife realm of Sanda.

Enjoy

1. Hospital Requiem

The story starts in the hospital with Hospital Requiem. I can here the sound of the machine helping me breath & a voice from somewhere. Where have you been? Let Me go! & Friend? The melody comes in slow & melancholic just as I'm about to die. I can here the doctors talking but it's a muffled conversation. The melody becomes more floaty & the vocals seem less real. Surely I am passing over now into the other side. I can hear the ocean, the sea of souls but somehow I can still here that damn machine keeping me tethered to the mortal plane. As the machine finally stops I wail as I hear other sounds out of the ether.

2. Foliage Pathway

On the Foliage pathway I start my journey proper. Slight rain falls around me as I try to get my bearings. Suddenly it feels clear what has happened to me but I am still unsure as to how, why or most importantly where I am. Everything seems strange as an other worldly melody hums around my head & small strange bugs buzz around me. I can hear muttering nearby but as I walk down the path surrounded by the most beautiful leaves the people fade & I'm presented with something huge & indescribable. It's gone, this godlike thing. I'm alone.

3. Leraine

Completely alone I am standing before open plains as the wind rushes hard in front of me, yet I do not feel it. Another melody permeates the air & disspells the wind leaving just the trickling of water. I think of the life I left behind & Leraine who undoubtedly mourns my passing still. How long has it been?

I march on with purpose. I have no idea as to my goal but still I march on. My life flashes before me as I march, a long happy life in that world I led. I had the love of a good woman & the friendship of people who really cared for me. I was the first to leave it. My impatience must have gotten the better of me, my thirst for exploration led me to this land alone so alone I must march. Across the plains to where I don't know, but I'm looking forward to what awaits me next.

I stop. I sense something ahead. I'm nervous & I don't know what to do.

4. The Realms Of Sanda

I plunge on & find myself in a bustling marketplace. People everywhere selling their wares, chatting away. Nobody's noticed me, should they? Would they? Am I just another traveller passing by?

I filter out all the hustle & bustle as I focus on it. Right there across the square. Something familiar yet alien. I walk towards it but it doesn't get any closer. It's still in the same place & I have moved but somehow it remains the distance away from me. No matter how much or how fast I move it stays out of reach. I don't even know what it is but it has filled my head. I must have it, an all consuming passion takes me as I rush on but it still wont come. As I rush I am halted. A hand grabs my shoulder pulling me back. I look back, a woman is holding onto my shirt so I can move. She pulls me closer & whispers in my ear the disappears. What? I didn't catch that? She's gone I'll never know what it was. But when I look down, it's there waiting in front of me as it always had been.

5. The King Of Sanda

Looking closely at the box I recognise it as my box. The one in which I kept all my old photos & love letters. Of course I open it & I'm surrounded by a blinding light. I'm in a hallway surrounded by alien dancers moving so slowly to the slow music. They are not all alien, many are human many are not but yet they are all the same. Above them all sits a man who could be King. He looks on me, as our eyes meet the scene disappears before my tired eyes.

6. Born In a Tropical Swamp

It's hot here, it's muggy, it's dark & it's foreboding. I'm knee deep in the wet earth, I try to move but it's slow going. A contrast from where I was just transported from. Strange creatures I can hear around me & in the distance I can see a light. I try to make my way towards the light but it's hard going & it has started raining. I give up, I lie on my back & try & sink into the ground, but it wont take me. An Eagle plunges out of the sky & grasps me in it's talons. It flies me high out of the tropical swamp, out of the jungle above the trees. I can see the tree tops I can see the palace behind me where I just was and in the distance where I am headed I can see a castle, dark & foreboding I fly closer & lower. The Eagle is dropping, am I too heavy? I look again at the castle, what before looked dark & scary now looks like pristine white beauty but soon it is obscured by the trees as I fall lower & lower. The Eagle drops me, as I free fall with the rain I wonder if there is pain here. I heard that there would be no pain but still I am fearful of it. I land painlessly on the ground, as I stand there is the woman from before. Who is she? Why is she here again? What is she saying?

7. Kingdom Of Hearts

As the woman disappears I start walking again. She looked disappointed that I couldn't understand her message. I walk anyway in the direction of the castle, along the road coming the other way are monks. Some human others not so much, I've no idea what is going on but they all sing the same song. They are praising someone, they can't they sing, they love they praise. I walk on, they didn't notice me. Their song fades from my memory as the sound fades from my ears. I walk on towards the castle. I come out of the trees & see it, it's smaller than I first though & closer too. In a few steps I'm there & I'm greeted by children. Strange somehow that they should all seem so happy when they should be sad.

8. Friday Fall

The gates open & the children disperse. I walk on into the main building of the castle & into the main hall. So many people rejoice! They dance, they sing, they eat & drink together. The talk & laugh, the mood is so different from the last gathering I attended. There is energy here & a real sense of belonging. I feel like I've come home, that my journey is over & I'm again among people who care for me.

A man grabs my hand & bring me into the dance, we dance for some time but he leaves. There is the woman again, I go to her & offer her my hand. She takes it & I pull her up to dance. I stare into her eyes but she's not there. Her eyes are blank & soulless. All the revellers seem to fade away yet are still there. As fire comes to her eyes & she is awakened she turns & runs away. As she gets to the door she looks back beckoning me to follow her.

9. Terata

I follow, intrigued. She leads me down a series of winding passageways, deep into the castle. It looks as if no one's been down this way for years, decades, centuries or even millenia. Only the bugs are disturbed as we make our way down. She disappears through a door to the right. There is sunlight shining from the other side & I step through into a beautiful garden.

10. Shrine

She's gone. All I can see in the garden is a little shrine at the bottom of it & all I can here is the cicadas in the background.

I walk towards the little shrine & I brush off the moss and the dirt so I can read the epitaph. Leraine. May she join us here soon. I fall to my knees, head in my hands & begin to cry. Soon. Soon? What does this mean? She'll be here soon? She'll die soon? We'll be together again soon? The mix of joy & anguish is unbearable.

11. We No Longer Need Ourselves

Time has no meaning here. I've just gotten here yet I've been here forever. Everything is new & fresh yet everyone is an old friend. The best of both worlds it seems yet I am alone, waiting. Will I wait forever in this place with no time? Among old friends & new experiences can I truly be alone? Without her, yes, I will always be. So I wait.

I don't know if I got this story how it was meant to be told as this is a game of Chinese whispers and the story is different on every retelling. There are no favourite chapters. It's a story that needs be heard as a whole to be fully understood.

very nice album indeed. The vega libre ep is also pretty fine! A little less playable in a set imho. But a very nice album for home listening.

If anybody knows where to find an original copy of tryshasla let me know ;)

It took me long enough, but finally I found one.

Good luck, and happy hunting dude. ;)

Anyway the story is about a dying man & his journey through the afterlife realm of Sanda.

Enjoy

I don't know if I got this story how it was meant to be told as this is a game of Chinese whispers and the story is different on every retelling. There are no favourite chapters. It's a story that needs be heard as a whole to be fully understood.

Its a master piece, but only because of the uptempo songs, so its not entirely a master pice, there downbeat songs are really good, without being seriously mind-blowing, theres this lack of originality between each song, but the 3 song: lerraine, friday fall and born with a... are really masterpieces. Well I dont know, for me its not a master pice but almost, but i really understand people who will say that its a masterpiece, cause its has that kind of feeling to it when im listening, production is simple perfect, but theres a lack IMO somewhere, but only there downbeat tracks. cause the 3 songs are extremely crazy beautiful, and still 4 i listen to those songs almost every week.

I'm a little late in adding my $0.02, but, although I do not normally write music reviews, I felt that this warranted it. A few years ago I was listening to the chillout channel on Digitally Imported while I was cleaning my apartment. My room mates at the time were in a band and they had shows to play a couple of hours away, so they would be away for the weekend and therefore I had the place (and the sound system) to myself.

I had a habit of keeping Notepad open next to the Winamp player so that I could write down any new tracks I thought I might want to get. I remember hearing Leraine start and walking to the computer, slightly annoyed, because it starts out so quietly and I hate having to adjust the volume every 20 seconds. After I raised the volume, I went back to what I was doing. It turns out that it was a good thing I did because when the main theme of the track began it was playing at a loud enough volume to hear all the nuances and subtleties in the track.

I remember stopping dead in my tracks and sitting down on the couch to listen to the song in it's entirety. It was not like anything I had ever heard before; it was powerful and the melody was heartbreakingly beautiful. I quickly copied down the details of the track and set out to find the rest of the songs. Most of the time, for me, anyway, when I get details for the rest of an album after hearing one track that I liked, I find that it tends to be a disappointment. Not so with Tryshasla.

I don't know exactly what it is about this album, but there's something about it that hits me on a level that music never had before (or since). Every single track has something unique and fresh to offer that doesn't fit the usual ambient / chillout mould.

As earlier reviewers have written, Tryshasla is the story of a man's journey from death in a hospital to the afterlife realm of Sanda. This theme and story is one that could very well turn to something hackneyed and trite, but that never happens with Tryshasla. Even the transitions in between tracks are interesting and moving.

To me, this album is a masterpiece. It's gorgeous and unusual and is my favourite ambient album of all time and I honestly don't think I'll find anything quite like it again. The tracks I liked the best are Friday Fall, Born in a Tropical Swamp and, of course, Leraine. All of them, however, are fantastic and easy to listen to. I recommend this album to people often when I'm asked about good psy-ambient.

Anyone who is interested in a fresh, different, and interesting album that is still highly playable and enjoyable will love this.
