Dusty Lizard TRACK BY TRACK: Crazy on Chocolate Rastalien's opening track introduces itself with a funky synth rhytm before launching itself into the main beat. Before long, pads and percusssion fill up the audioscape and they layers really begin to get twisted! By three minutes, "Crazy" is a complete psy-trance track, rife with contorted beats, eerie children's voices, and a staccato acid lead which jackhammers your synapses. Expect more bends and turns in this ever-evolving track than a country mountain backroad. Hidden Signs "Signs" features a funkadelic bassbeat launching you into a safari of sound environments... intricately gated synth spits and retro, squared-off rhythms make headway for filtered drums and nomadic pads which seem neither here nor there. Refreshingly, the bassline reinvents itself every couple of measures, laying an excellent foundation for the myriad mood changes his track offers. At once catchily funky, others downright spooky, "Signs" is at all times energetic and exciting. Mystic Machine "Mystic" is feral, born to be heard outdoors... the echoed, reverbed effects and cosmic nature of the pads lends itself well to the wilderness trance fest atmosphere. Full on to the max with subtle tributes to the genre's roots, this track is a nighttime rocker which will definitely find itself in many a DJ's mixset this year. Eastern Indian scales combine with acid-drenched, razor sharp synth saws to create an epiphanic dance opportunity... "Mystic" makes a great capacitor for keeping the trance energy high. Sarah Tonin This track is markedly different in flavor and spectrum than it's predecessor, but certainly no less well produced and enjoyable... "Sarah" bounces you along like a game of jump-rope hopscotch, and the slightly lowered tempo of the track lends space and time to enjoy the strata of tweaked out, metamorphosing sounds the Rastaliens manage to squeeze in. From measure to measure and loop to loop, nothing remains the same... every sound bite is unique and masterfully tailored to progression. Spaceshifter This track is simply great, and all the elements are here... full-on acid leads echoing out into the cosmos, gritty, grinding low rhythms and a full-on bass and percussion section make this piece fitting for the peak hours of the night! By about halfway through this one gets downright sinister and haunting in its melody; an inimical, alien soundverse delivering ego-crushing soundwaves and enough audio amplitude to feed the needs of your expanding conscious awareness. Funky Kanguruh An aberrant hybridization of wet, elastic squelches and earthy, tribal percussion grooves are slathered across a meaty, grinding bassline here.... "Kanguruh" is a tech-tastic cacophany of nead-nod-inspiring electronic arrangements spanning the gamut of oscillation and effects. This piece has a high danceability potential and just the right amount of flavor to be terrifically psychedelic, retro and down-to-earth at the same time... each sound is masterfully crafted and no part of the track is overdone. Do It This track has taken a step towards the dark side, and isn't shy to admit it... Baleful synth frequencies slice into your perceptions with the precision of a mad scientist! The breakdowns are small-ish and portentious, giving you only a moment of breath before turning up the juice a notch higher every time. Nothing gets boring here... in true Rastaliens style, the bassline is ever-changing... by the end the mood is completely differnent than the start. Outer Body Aptly named, "Outer Body" takes your senses to unintelligible planes of perception. The bassbeat is fast, full-on, and in your face... Acidulous leads ping-pong pack and forth between your eardrums, while atonal pad layerings add mood, dissonance and acceleration to the environment. The progression has more twists and turns than a pretzel-shaped wormhole, and it all works together to create an ballsy psy-trance track that is cutting-edge, groovy, foot stomping insanity. Electromatic Rastaliens shows off the true spectrum of their talent here... highly melodic, ethereal, and full of harmony with a decidedly faster tempo, "Electromatic" makes full use of the musical scales while also adding its own notes in between. The moods of a slightly epic direction is spiced with enough dissonance to keep you floating amongst the clouds of a cracked heaven. Perfect for those morning winding-down transitional sets, this piece is all about full-on relaxation. Dusty Lizard Alas, every great summertime rocker of an album deserved its own downtempo trck at the end, and "Dusty Lizard" is just that... a cybernetic arrangement of psychedelically filtered percussive drops and melodies which bustle over each other like blind pups searching for the teat. Some electro-guitarish synth parts add roughness around the edges while the arpeggios flower and branch off into unexpected directions. "Dusty" is a great outro trck for this amazing album, adding a perfect amount of closure to the moods thus expressed. Jon Cocco
I was listening to Bodyspeaker and Weird Condios this morning from their "Freestyle" album. Both are pretty good tracks. Neither would tear up the dancefloor in my opinion. For me Rastaliens lack super songs or tracks that really stand out as great to me. I'm very drawn to several tracks they've released over the years due to the well done melody work. Based on samples here Spaceshifter sounds pretty cool, more aggressive. I really like the opening and continuing melodies in Electromatic. Wish their were more emotive dance songs. I like when they add more and stronger melodies and sounds to their songs. The more infectious their melodies, the more I enjoy their Full On sound.
