Ethan Brand
Hello all you psytrance people, Well, it's been well nigh 7 years since I've plunged into the psytrance world and I've seen some interesting shifts and developments in the scene. But with new demands of work and life in general taking precedence over my passionate hobby, I'm afriad I may be losing touch with that part of my life which I'm fond of. So what is the general state of psytrance these days? Is much of full-on still as juvenile and unimaginative as before? Has there been any new development in this sub-genre to warrant a fresh new look? How's minimal/progressive developing nowadays? I remember 2001 and 2002 as exciting times when artists from Germany, France, and elsewhere were producing some hard and trippy stuff; for example, beat bizzare, noma, mos, yumade, magnetrixx, SBK, shiva chandra, and a host of others I don't recall. Are these folks still producing? Has there been any other concrete sub-genres which have splintered off? Give me a quick update folks Ethan
frozen dream
full-on is evolving into the ever downward spiral of unimagination and copy pasteness, though some nice tracks still pop-up here and there if you're willing to shift through loads and loads of shit-psy, dark as well is moving into blurred nonsense/screech trance with only the height of bpm as a kick/goodness-factor and some shitty ugly leads+uncontrolled glitches, nonetheless some dark artists still keep to their standard and continue their legacy with kick-ass and top notch produced madness ala kindzadza/psykovsky/electrypnose. oldskool on the contraire sees a new dawn with suntrip records and metapsychic and many artists jump to the production of new 'old' tunes, though the new tunes are often overloaded with nitzo-style 'over'melodies and no structure or story, all to the extent of non-stop rocking the trancefloor filled with an audience who only cares about jumping to a kick and shaking their arms wildly to some alienating, weirdifying non-melody, reducing their taste and criticism to a ridiculous underdeveloped and idiotic level. ethics and aesthetics have been totally reduced to uncool as the only motto of the goa scene has and ever will be 'anything goes'. prog makes moves into various directions, the israelis continue to exploit the genre as 'slow full-on style', but on the international front you can see nice moves all around with various artists looking in wider directions for new formulas, only to mention Antix' Wanderers (which i didn't like, but i still find it to be very innovative in terms of extending the genre in overlap with others such as house/tech) the remnant of the psy-tek scene is somewhat a mystery to me as most of those artists have vanished almost completely to my attention and interest. in psy you have lots of people and lots of styles, some artists are into producing their own style and innovating it, and others are in it to make money and keep their success at level by producing what they need to rock dancefloors and survive. opinions are like assholes, everbody's got one. abasio
Sift through all the shit & you still get great stuff in each sub genre. Psy is still my favourite genre, it just needs a little more work now.
