mixing 4/4 with 3/4

'Just got my copy of 6 String Adelica and I REALLY want to mix that 3/4 Total Eclipse track (or ANY 3/4 track for that matter) with 4/4 tracks, but the transition sounds pretty painful if I don't do it SUPER quick...any advice from the more skilled DJs?

it's as easy as 4/4 with 4/4...just focus on the kickdrums. The trick is finding 2 tracks that match well (the less sounds the better) otherwise 95 out of 100 mixes will sound awfull.

it's actually very easy and lots of fun if you're doing it with the right tunes. find one track that starts with a regular rhythm and ends in triplets (for example lab - trippin' trolls) and find one that starts in triplets and ends with a regular 4/4 (like puro - derango tango), and put your favourite triplet-tunes in between. :) of course the selection of tunes you can pick is rather limited this way, but i tend to add a little triplets-section into my mixes quite regularly when i'm in a silly mood. ;)

but don't _ever_ try beatmixing a tune in triplets with one in a regular 4/4, it always sounds totally utterly crappy whenever i hear someone trying it. if you don't want to bother playing tracks that make it possible to make a fluent transition you're definitely off much better using just a simple intro-outro fade ..

well then wouter i'd be more than curious to hear you doing a fluent mix in your easy peasy way, or maybe you can mention two tracks that would make it possible? :)

I'm tempted to agree with Mr. phaeton's method here (good suggestion, phaeton!). Maybe I'm just too unseasoned, wouter, but I know for a fact that the kicks on these two tracks are lined up PERFECTLY, and I've tried mixing them over and over at varying strategic points. Rhythmically, it just ain't happening. To anyone dancing, it would come as a real showstopper.

3/4 is different than triplets. Triplets are still 4/4. Then again, the only 3/4 I've heard in psy is a little bit from Posford. I wrote a trance track in 3/4 once. Lots of fun, I tell ya. It's my favorite time signature. :)

i know ea, but i checked out that total eclipse tune and it's definitely not in 3/4. triplets can be used in pretty much any time signature though, but in psytrance it's usually all in 4/4 indeed. (unless your name is posford or ubar tmar ;)

cross-pattern mixing is something that you're prolly not gonna do too often in a single set. With that in mind, dont forget that the x-fader is not just there for long sloooooooow transitions. Those awkward tracks would be a good place to have a little fun with the more cutty/switchback style of mixing...

No harm in giving tracks the quick 1-2-3-4-CUT! to the other side if you're timings right...

Takes a good while to master though, and you have to know that track INSIDE OUT!!!

still, life could be worse than playing psy 24/7... you could be DJing Scooter, Ian Van Dahl and Darude.... :-(
