The Origins Of Trance

ok if you were to make a collection of tunes to explain the origins of trance, what would be your pics? I mean, ranging from "trance" that already existed in the late 80s before the actual name was given (even before? ie Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze... personally I considered that "trance" should at least have a 4/4 kick but it's up to you to define the exact startof point;) ), and building up until 94-95 which would be more or less the time when we had all these genre-splits and the death of "trance" per se (cause after that everything was "hard", "epic", "goa", etc...). The best would be to name some milestone classics that everyone knows, but also less known tracks that still sound great today And of course, a trip from the origins would imply naming oldest tracks first and moving on to newer stuff but if you find that 2 tracks split by a few years difference sound great together then feel free to put them together Also keep in mind that I refer to trance in BROAD terms, not just the sub-sub genre for psytrance...

 

After a careful selection that lasted weeks and weeks I've narrowed down my list to these (ok I admit my choice is slightly biased towards drifting dreamy stuff cause for me, that's the best that trance had to offer back then).

well legend has it that the term "trance" as an electronic music genre was officially defined in 1992... although a quick stroll through discogs will show you referals to "trance" already in the late 80s (KLF, Dance 2 Trance,...)

I'm quite shocked nobody mentions Kraftwerk.

Granted, they don't make music you can describe as "trance" nowadays, but you can see that the roots lie there. If you want to go back to the origins, a glance towards this great band is inevitable.

 

Their song Trans Europa Express for example ... that was 1977 and it already shows elements of what modern electronic music later on became. They also had releases before (Radioaktivität) ... but I recall them having less of these elements, that's why I picked that song.

 

The aforementined Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze are to be considered aswell IMO, although that's rather the ambient department. Also Jean-Michel Jarre - especially Jarre made some compositions later on that are more upbeat...

well yes I guess the hardest part would be where to draw the line between "trance" and "something elese that inspired trance". Indeed acts like Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michel Jarre have undoubtley influenced trance (and techno in general) but if you go down that path then the origins of trance could go as far as tribal chanting/ druming which would basically be the most primal form of music created by man... So for me personally, IMHO, for trance to be trance it has to have:

1. almost exclusive use of electronic music instruments

2. a 4/4 kick

3. produce a trance-like hypnotic dreamy state BUT also have "feelings" (ranging from happy to sad)

 

 

But of course eveyone is welcome to give their definition of trance

well yes I guess the hardest part would be where to draw the line between "trance" and "something elese that inspired trance". Indeed acts like Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michel Jarre have undoubtley influenced trance (and techno in general) but if you go down that path then the origins of trance could go as far as tribal chanting/ druming which would basically be the most primal form of music created by man... So for me personally, IMHO, for trance to be trance it has to have:

1. almost exclusive use of electronic music instruments

2. a 4/4 kick

3. produce a trance-like hypnotic dreamy state BUT also have "feelings" (ranging from happy to sad)

haha, yes, it's actually a good question where to draw the line...

 

I'd still think Kraftwerk should be mentioned though. At least on a side note.

I wasn't that much into it like you though.

I kinda came to it in 1998 or so ... and because I had no money I had to get my releases from used CD markets. And since they mostly not sell new releases there (at least not cheap), I got in touch with the actual older stuff in that year. I remember Dream Dance 2 being one of the first CDs I bought ... and I instantly fell in love with Paragliders - Oasis, I remember. And there were a lot of other classics on there aswell (The Visions Of Shiva - How Much Can You Take). That's kinda where it kicked in. So I was not part of the scene, but still got to listen to the older stuff, actually grew up with it despite it actually was before my time so to say and I find that cool...

And some stuff I even remember from the radio! Dance 2 Trance - Power of American Natives for example. We had this trance-kinda radio station, but it went down...

Gosh, meanwhile the old Dream Dance and Future Trance in my collection have gone from love to hate to cult status. I sold a few at some point, but now I desperately want them back because of the memories
