PsyFiles.

Ok, maybe this is more for music making section or maybe even tech talk, but since it is about psy in General, Ill post it here in order to get greater attention.

For a long time I have had this idea that it would be nice to have like a SENDSPACE or whatever dedicated to PSY (And its subgenres). However, I do not have time to sit down and program it all. I have the server space, I have the bandwidth! If someone here would be intressted in helping me programming something like that, I would highly appreciate it. What I want it to be is a file sharing of tracks (your own of course, no illegal stuff) without the pain of going through some darn CAPTCHA that does not work or waiting for 50 seconds until the download starts etc etc. It would require that you become a member so you can PUT/GET files, but that is not such a pain in the ass, since the service is for free (Once its up, donations are welcome though, servers are not cheap)

So, anyone up for it? Good idea?!

Well.. there's allready sites like psytracks.com (which require registration to download), twisted sessions (which doesn't require registration to download files).

They do look kinda messed up, if you could build a site that had a decent look, easy to browse, not too aggressive for the eye, then yeah, could be a very good realized idea.

There's others free music hosts too, but not strictly dedicated to psy-stuff, altho you can find that kind of material there. Like soundclick, music.download.com, etc..

There's one thing that's in common with all of these sites tho, which is that they only host 1 track per file, zipped archives or entire albums in an mp3 file are not supported. So maybe this is where to look at if you want to make something different from all those web music hosts. Just my 2 cents.. :)

Might be a good idea.

I can foresee a scenario where producers can promote themselves and labels can dig them. Perfect.

Would you extend that to other styles of music than only technomusic ? If so, then the service might reach more "trendy" styles, and I'd find it shameful to help labels making even more money, just for free. Maybe a subscription based on, the company size or something...it makes me think about what Monster does with CVs.

Else,

Any idea of further functionalities ?

Would there be some search engine ? affiliating ? RSS threading ? etc ?

Would there be any quotas or limit mechanism (to prevent one from downloading day and night ?)

How could you prevent misuse/abuse ?

Would there be any financing of it (ads) ?

What would make it more attactive than MySpace (where the author can also have its own presentation page, and established artists can be there too) ?

From my point of view this is not so hard to acheive some "sendspace" functional area, although it's not obviouos either because of the throughput/scalability you need.

You also need a database, to setup a lot of diskspace/redundancy/distributed computing functionalities, a web interfacee, an admin interface with moderation and stuff (just like with forums).

Technically, for setting up a scalable stack like this for free, you have to check JEE technologies (and not do the same mistakes as Twitter). The UI can be either only HTML/Ajax (like Google applications), which make it easier to index content but are less fancy, or Flash based (Adobe Flex), much more fancy, but much less indexable.

Not using flash to built the site doesn't neccesarly mean the site will have to look worse imo. Just take a look at soundclick. They've added theme support, each artist can design their 'home' page, which can look pretty good if handled properly. I don't think we have to compare to myspace, that site is a design fail, soundclick looks and feels much more in place, and is alot faster on top of that. Here's an example:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_music.cfm?bandID=418975

Would be nice if we could have something like this dedicated to psy and its subgenres.
