Guest Lunar
Okay so the question is very simple...what do you prefer: to hear a DJ play your favourite music but his mixing Sux BIG TIME!!! or to hear a DJ play music that you think is okay but his mixing is AWESOME!!!!! On the DJ who mixes awesome: i say he play Okay music cause no one would like to hear music that he/she thinks sux no matter how good tje DJ mixes..that's why is say he play ok music.. the question is a bit harder to answer like this ( see what i mean??) I would defenently prefer if he played my favourite music...in other words i think the tracks a DJ plays is more important then his mixing techniques..what do you think?? BOOM! Guest Quazzi
I really don't care if the dj knows how to mix or not, just as long he plays a set that i like, it's fine with me. :-)
Guest rx7style
I wouldn't care if there was NO mixing between tracks I really liked during a "DJ" set. Queue up a CD with 2 sec gaps for all I care... playing tunez that suck is much much much worse.
Guest mindbender
Track selection is more important, but I don't understand why that can't be fused with good mixing. For some reason, it's usually a choice between the exactly same alternatives you gave, Lunar. Lauri
Guest Setsuko
both !!! realy ... otherwise he's just a bad dj who ruins the whole evening . it simply that what makes this scene sometimes marginal . wanna be fuck dj's playing mp3's . I prefer it smooth . you can not build up with awesome tracks if you can't mix . do it pro , give us the quality we deserve anyway , good post (i wanted to give my meaning about this subject but couldn't find the right moment ) psy bye

Guest Dr. Krelm
Naturally I would prefer both. But given the two choices, I would rather hear a DJ that can mix OK tunes extremely well. Reasons... Bad mixing disrupts my groove on the dancefloor. When I hear a set that has even the very BEST tunes, but is mixed poorly, it is almost painful to my ears. It is not an impossible (or even difficult) task for a DJ to learn how to transition proficiently, so it is painful to hear DJs that never even make an attempt to learn. Any monkey can learn to beatmatch and correctly phrase in a few months so there are smooth transitions between songs. But there is something to be said about a DJ that can mix really well. Sometimes 2 "just OK" tracks mixed together make an extremely good groove. I can think of some songs I like to play that sound somewhat boring by themselves, but have one or two elements I like (nice bassline, good tribal percussion, etc). They are only "OK" by themselves. I would never play those songs by themselves, but when *used* in a heavily mixed context with another track, something really cool comes out of the combination. One example is the Hopefiend album....it is boring on its own, IMO, but I still play the hell out of it because I can use parts of tracks to spice up some other tracks that need a little extra percussion or funk. But given the choice between a DJ playing great tunes but mixing horribly, and a DJ playing horrible tunes but mixing well, I will just go home....I have done it. Guest --==1400MiLeS==--
Dunno, one of the charms of 604 is that the DJ is less important than the artitst that actually create the music. The stuff that is spinned is the most import part for me and its nice if the mixing is good. But if the right trax are played and the mixing sux I still would have a nice evening. The other way around, i would probably be pissed off. Kill the overrated DJ...praise the artists
Guest joe
its all about track selection in psy. There are so few psy dj's who can mix well anyways (as mixing psy requires muuuuuuuuuch better attention to detail than normal trance).
Anoebis
It depends on the music! When you play véry old skool music from 95 etc mixing is véry hard and a fade-in fade-out mix can be good enough to continue the trip when you play more progressive stuff the mixing becomes more and more important so you have a good storytelling... Guest Setsuko
well Anoebis .. I guess you already heared Goami playing oldskool here in Belgium . he can't beatmatch at all an ruins it every time , sometimes he does not even fade it out/in .. sound horrible imo and I also remember those Mexican dj's playing full-on @ Hey Baby Let's Goa a year ago ... bad mixing if you ask me ... anyway , a dj set should be mixed properly .. no matter what style .. otherwise it's like listening to a compilation at a party ... a bit weak if you ask me ... Guest r2d2
My vote goes to track selection. Good mixing is a nice bonus but the music itself is much more important..at least to me.
Guest BRAzALIEN
if a dj doesnt have a good mixing technique he can destroy a music... imagine in a rave the dj loosing a pitch, the crowd stops right away dude... good music means good flow if the dj breaks the flow you break the music... if the dj is not playing good music but at least mixes it perfectly at least you dont loose track of where you are at a certain point of time if you know what i mean...the worst is geting lost in a trip because of the dj... Guest r2d2
I don't go to parties because music will be mixed well. If that's what I cared about the most I'd go to House or even Hip Hop parties. Those Dj's can mix the hell out of their tracks. That will not move me. What moves me is music that fits my taste first, mixing is less important. Many live acts don't mix their track while they perform but the crowd never seemed to dislike that...at least @ parties I attended.
Guest BRAzALIEN
i agree that the dj is less important than the artist that actualy made the music, but if you are not going to a party to listen to the artist playing well his songs, it's the most important thing that a dj can mix songs smoothly if not he creates crap from a song that tear you up... now if you have a bad dj no doubt it's better having a cd with 2 secs gap between tracks, and it's obvious that a good dj can get shitty trax and make them sound the way they want... Guest r2d2
"i agree that the dj is less important than the artist that actualy made the music" That's all I'm trying to tell you. If I don't like same old formula "I'll put some GMS, new 3d vision, and some Infected Mushroom" that gets played over and over again there is no mixing that will change that. I still don't like it.
