I am especially fond of...

Robert Rich & B. Lustmord - Stalker

Creepy dark soundscapes with no cliches

Atrium Carceri - Seishinbyouin

Sample ridden nightmarish stuff

False Mirror - Chronostatic Scenes

Dark semi-nightmarish trippy & cool

Spielerei & Mantacoup - Cold War

Cold nuclear winter music

what else is, in your opinion the best dark ambient out there?

For me I don't like cliche stuff like you get in dark psy but just dark creepy stuff.

Just got too raison d'etre albums which have sounded great so far.

Stalker is IMO the best dark ambient album there is. Far, far superior than anything in that genre. An ultimate classic for every music lover, regardless of the preferred genre.

Atrium Carceri's Kapnobatai is also pretty good. Another album that springs to mind is Flint Glass - Nyarlathotep, but it may have too much rhythms & beats for true dark ambient fans.

Yeah, what I know of it is good indeed ... hell, I already heard so much positive stuff about this album and still haven't heard all of it, what a shame.

I used to dig Atrium Carceri - Cellblock...

Other than that I strongly recommend:

Ulf Söderberg - Vindarnas Hus ... very good. Ulf Söderberg, who also calls himself Sephiroth is brilliant IMO. It's dark ambient mixed with tribal percussion elements ... everything I heard from Ulf and his Sephiroth moniker so far was absolutely perfect ... it has a very deep, dark and mystic atmosphere, something that goes beyond mere ambient or mere tribal ... very awesome ... this stuff is already SO GOOD that I am not intending to ever own all of his albums because I want to save one or two up for really bad times where I have something positive to look out to :D

Desiderii Marginis - That Which Is Tragic And Timeless. Interesting because he's using a guitar in some songs. I like it how the guitar gives a warmth and personal feel to the music I am missing in most dark ambient stuff. Very good actually! And Still Life is one helluva cold and sad song IMO...

Kammarheit - The Starwheel. One word: drone. If you like drone, I bet you'll like this one!

Lately I'm very fond of samples from Oorchach - Chtonikka aswell, this is the only one I found that comes at least a little closer to Ulf Söderberg in terms of deep atmosphere, but it's on the gothic/industrial end of the scale ... it's sold out right now though and I don't own it.

I don't know much about dark ambient, but I nonetheless feel like I should mention Orbit Constructions - Androneda. Before Ormion does.

That album is really good. Dark space ambient

I'm hoping for a dark ambient mix sometime today :posford:

Do you know what Lustmord - [Other] is like?

Nope. But I think it has guitar work which I don't like in dark ambient.

Among the albums I didn't recommend there is (live) rehashing of old material (Rising), more stuff with metal guitars (Pigs of the roman empire, Juggernaut), or even drums and cliche melodies (Metavoid), or it's just not as good and original as the earlier albums (Carbon core).

Not completely through yet, but ... nice mix, Joseph :)

I find it very interesting to discover some new dark ambient stuff. Especially Evan Barthonlomew (if that's correct ... the one with the bells at the end) amazed me ... never knew that the Bluetech guy does this stuff...

The 13 doesn't fit in IMO (if that's the IDMish one) ... was that intended (regarding the mix title)?

Not really sure I hear anything too IDM ish but 12. Atrium Carceri - Frosted Snowflakes is a little harder than those surrounding it. It's the one that starts with a Japanese sample has heavier beats at the end, 13. Spielerie & Mantacoup - After The Shockwave has a slight melody at the start but that fades into a cold windy track with some scattered beats.

The 13th track is the scariest concept IMO, nuclear war is scarier than ghosts & horror movies.

My main problem as a DJ is that I am really bad at fitting in, I just play what I want :P

I thought that Senzar - The Red Water would be the track that fit in the least though

By the way the bells are the start of the raison d'etre track just after Evan Bartholomew :)

I recently ordered

Steve Roach - The Magnificent Void

Klaus Schulze - Mirage

Lustmord - The Place Where The Black Stars Hang

Lustmord - [Other]

I wasn't going to get other but as I took it off my amazon to buy list they dropped the price so I thought what the hell

Nice, those first 3 are among my all time favorites! :o Don't expect instantly gratifying music. I recommend some serious headphone sessions. Give it some time, and then maybe some more time. :)

Also Mirage is never qualified as 'dark ambient', but the first half definately has dark ambientish characteristics.
