karan129
Black Sun EmpireThanks, they even have a track titled "Arrakis"!! Big beat Got no idea, Big beat More big beat Techno influenced big beat Are you sure your actually looking for drum n bass? Well someone told me Voodoo People was DnB and then I don't pretend to know much about Breaks and DnB (which is why I opened this topic), plus no harm in extending one's musical horizons right? If I like fast Big Beat tracks why shouldn't I like DnB? Note: I'm looking for Big Beat and DnB both, not just DnB
Darkarbiter
Theres a dnb remix of voodoo people by pendulam, however the original isn't. but yeh, I'm a fan of both too, I'll recomend some artists in a while.
karan129
I don't see that much of a difference between DnB and Breaks, DnB is just faster and so has simpler beats. EDIT: I get it now, DnB is way faster and has a bom---tak-----bom-tak beat instead of a more complicated break. The sounds in between are shorter and high pitched to go with the speed. Cybernetika
You should definitely check out: Breaks: Front Line Assembly - Backlash (industrial with a frenzy of breaks) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMTaXVAe0Do Front Line Assembly - Buried Alive (hard and fast DnB/Industrial) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzR53DbL2rs Noise Unit - Liberation (nice drums on this track, unfortunately not on YT) Noise Unit - The Drain (not on YT, but one of the tracks that got me into the genre) Moby - James Bond Theme (a bit smoother but nevertheless very energetic) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P79cVnDmzB0 Expansion Union - Playing with Lightning (one of the best heavy breaks tracks ever!!!) Prodigy - Firestarter (for obvious reasons) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28ow4TLMTqM DnB: Current Value - Dark Rain (this is pure DnB, but what a great dark anthem, and how sick drumsounds!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiTazePDkqk Unknown Error - Exit (so much detail in this track!) Noisia - Block Control (one of the tracks that got me into DnB, if youre looking for high energy, look no further) Black Sun Empire - Arrakis (has been mentioned already, but this is THE alltime classic) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUuvIi3UFK4 and to conclude this, a track by me... a mix of metal, industrial and DnB at extreme speed: "Human Error"
lumpi
DJ Hidden - The later after (Ad Noiseam) example: enjoy PS: I second Current Value!
mono
for fast hard-hitting dnb check out Evol Intent - Era of Diversion (A+ Album) Or in the same genre: Limewax / Tecnical Itch / B Key / Counterstrike / SPL / Some Nice Breakbeat in the vein of Prodigy: Aquasksky vs Masterblaster
danet
EDIT: I get it now, DnB is way faster and has a bom---tak-----bom-tak beat instead of a more complicated break. The sounds in between are shorter and high pitched to go with the speed. I dont think that the beats are so simple in dnb. hey check out some jungle. listen to the tracks of Benny Page. Also check out the stuff that MIR Crew is releasing. heavy stuff!
alleycat
Most all the stuff Id recommend has been mentioned, except; Spor. Pretty much all his stuff that Ive heard is good. Some is dub/darkstep but others are hard and fast, and surprisingly trippy IMO.

Also check out the stuff that MIR Crew is releasing. heavy stuff! Nah. D'n'B can have loads of complicated beats. The main characteristic of the genre is, imo, the "intellectualisation" of jungle. Less furious screaming jamaicans, less blatantly party-influenced atmospheres. More chilled out and contemplative, but still very fast. Less furious screaming jamaicans, less blatantly party-influenced atmospheres. More chilled out and contemplative, but still very fast. Now that I've heard more DnB I agree with you:) I think I like the Neurofunk sub genre, Dieselboy's Human Resource is Neurofunk right? Anyone have any Neurofunk suggestions?

Darkarbiter
While on paper it has simpler beats, the main thing is with a faster tempo the sounds are shorter and have slower release (hip hop/downbeat has big boomey kicks that take ages to release). So yeh, theres certainly plenty of complicated breaks. and drum n bass is different moods etc to breaks.
qa2pir
Concord Dawn This is interesting. Would you call this style of d'n'b some kind of techno-hybrid? I've listened to Concord Dawn, Pendulum etc. and found a prevalence of very "clean" structure compared to other d'n'b. Also a focus on full-tempo melodies instead of half-tempo atmospheres to complement the drums. Any thoughts on this?
Basilisk
I don't even know where to begin with drum 'n bass... it's just too big. I'm interested in the more futuristic stuff, not jump-up or ragga jungle or whatever. One CD I came across that sounded pretty interesting was Gridlok's Break The System; it's filled with all kinds of swooshy psytrance noises. Might be worth a listen. alleycat
The neurofunk subgenre, I discovered, is the name for the style Ive always found most enjoyable. Seems a lot more thought out than the more rave-y jungle-y stuff, deeper and often darker, and usually with different percussion patterns than the average dnb. A lot of it I would even go as far to say could be called 'psy-dnb' if anyone actually cared enough to try and differentiate.

Do you have any specific recommendations? Is this the whole Ed Rush & Optical side of d'n'b?
alleycat
Precisely, Basilisk. Ed Rush and Optical are kinda the lighter end, hehe... Gridlok falls in that category too. Some that Ive found particularly enjoyable; Aikon Spor Black Sun Empire Break Evol Intent Concord Dawn Dieselboy Noisia (I highly recommend these guys) Cause 4 Concern Skynet Ram Trilogy Cooh Im still a noob when it comes to dnb but these artists are ones that Ive really enjoyed. Theres a lot of cheese dnb out there... (WTF vocal dnb?) Im rediscovering my first love, which was drum & bass. And discovering that some of the artists that I thought were decent (Aphrodite, Roni Size) are pretty mainstream and, especially in recent years, stale.
