I don't feel I'm truely done with a track until I've spent some time checking different positions in the mix. That's positions - also concider depth of field. Effect (like reverb, echo) wet/dry will control how close a sound appears in the mix. To make minor sounds stand out, think about panning far left or right. I personally like music that envelopes you. That is, you feel surrounded by the sound. You can only do that with channels dedicated to specific areas in the stereo field.
