Yes very important indeed.. If you pan well you dont have to eq sometimes sometimes. And all sounds exactly in the middle make the track boring.

To me, panning is about as important as it gets.

I don't feel I'm truely done with a track until I've spent some time checking different positions in the mix.

That's positions - also concider depth of field. Effect (like reverb, echo) wet/dry will control how close a sound appears in the mix.

To make minor sounds stand out, think about panning far left or right.

 

I personally like music that envelopes you. That is, you feel surrounded by the sound.

You can only do that with channels dedicated to specific areas in the stereo field.
