probably been here before but it's a nice topic.

when being a goalistener, you probably often get the question when you say:"i listen to goa/psy trance", what the hell is that?"

what do you tell people in order to make it clear?

i mostly keep it short and tell them about hippies in goa spacing their heads of on the beach growing tired of the rock sound, combining it with the then new found electronic music, from which emerged goa trance.

complicated, electronic music which could be described as a mixture between the old psychedlic rock and techno music.

long tracks with lot's of layers and weird sounds.

then people often still look completly flabberghasted and think your mad, but what do you tell them?

I say this.....

Imagine if Hard Trance ingested a whole sheet of acid....the result would be Psy-Trance.....just imagine music made for people on acid......trance is made for people on ecstasy and Psy-Trance is for people on acid....if you think about the effects of acid and what it does to your perception that is how Psy-Trance sounds...that same kinda vibe.

Something along those lines....

lunar i don't think that destroys the scene at all. i think it's about different perceptions. and realization of nature and surroundings...realizing that name is meaningless n only what is is meaningful....celebration and achieving nirvana on the dance floor... : -) i know i've done it many times without drugs. i've done it at times with drugs, but I find it easier to reach *that* spot without drugs...:-) specially acid...

it's definately a psychedelic music...

I have to do that exact thing on friday to a class to tell em what goa is. I'll probably not be able to say...i could break down the elements " sh101 style bassline, synth kick, 808 style hi hats...but who would understand thaT?:(

I dont mind people using "stimulating substances" at parties, just as long as they come for the pary, not for the dope.

Anyway, I dont describe it.. I let people listen to it, since you either like goa or not, and if you like it, then you will catchup on the history, atmosphere etc. eventualy.

most of the time when i'm sure they won't have a clue what it is, i just don't tell them at all. if a stranger asks me what kind of music i like i'll usually start off with "all kinds of music" and will hardly ever get any more specific than "noisy electronic weirdness" or "experimental techno-esque stuff" .. kinda sad really to be unable to articulate your number one passion to strangers, but hey .. i'm really as introvert a bastard as it gets. ;)

i'll try using some of the suggestions from this thread next time though .. =)

But when someone will talk about psy-trance to other people that don't know the music and says: for people on Acid!

How the hell does that sound?? that person that hear this will think that all the people (including me that never tried drugs) who is listening to this kind of music is people on acid...so Daneil, next time a relative (mum or dad or whatver) asks you what you listening to say trance for people on acid..let's see how happy they become after that...i don't mind people taking drugs at party...it's their life so they can do whatever they want..but when you say something like: People on acid it sounds so negative...don't you agree???

Face it lunar, drugs, especially acid, have a lot to do with this music. I used to think like you - I got into this music long before I tried any drugs, but when I did try, the music made a whole lot more sense. This music is perfect for tripping, that's a fact.

I usually don't describe psy to people, just tell them it's wierd shit which sounds like noise to most people. If the person does not have a negative view of psychedlics, then I may talk about the roots of the music, but I don't usually meet such people.

i believe you when you say it's perfect for tripping...Sometimes i am starting to feel and see things and even without drugs so imagine the music with drugs...but my point it sounds so negative for people on acid...tell them weird electronic dancemusic that brakes the boundries :)

amen woogz

i don't think describing i in terms of acid is bad the only people we'd turn off r the close minded fools who don't understand reality and the extreme power of the universe.... people who fear drugs, fear themselves and others, and are seduced by darkness. they hide behind walls and sit themselves atop a imaginary pedastal

I've tried telling Japanese people about it but with so many people they just don't understand (the J-Pop brigade)

How would you make it clear to someone whose really bad at English & has never taken drugs?
