Guest snoosnoo Posted April 9, 2003 Posted April 9, 2003 So I don't have a log in or password, so I can't "professionally" review, but God damn it people!!!!! look into Dark Nebula's new album. It's weird, rough and fast, dark of course, and makes you want to do a bunch of acid. It even leaves that strange feeling in your gut and makes you think crazy after you've finished blasting your eardrums with..... I just wanted to point out how happy this unexpected release made me after all the horrible crap that's been coming out lately... Definitely worth looking into. Enjoy Quote
Guest danvapid Posted April 9, 2003 Posted April 9, 2003 all this horrible crap coming out lately?! gimme a break...even the worst psy-trance song cannot be called horrible...and there has been plenty of quality stuff coming out lately, open your ears - actually TOO much quality stuff, that's a big reason why labels and artists are struggling financially...way too much supply for the demand that exists- having said this, i loved dark nebula's first album and hope this one surpasses it! i love the refreshing psychedelic element the aussies are bringing to this music Quote
Guest PK Posted April 9, 2003 Posted April 9, 2003 Why not at least TRY to explain us what it sounds like!? Ok dark.. What more? Minimal dark like Parasense? Minimal dark like Delta/X-Dream? Rock trance like Dark Soho? Light melodies? Only stumpy heavy bass rhythms? Why don`t people try to explain what it sounds like in tehir reviews? Thats the main reason why we read reviews isn`t it? It`s not that hard to explain, at least a little bit. You want to take a bunch of acid when you hear it, doesn`t say much... Pk Quote
Guest krize Posted April 9, 2003 Posted April 9, 2003 listen to it at Saiko-Sounds ; http://www.saikosounds.com/english/display...ase.asp?id=3285 I would call it hard, night time psycedelic trance (I would say more full on than minimal) (with great samples!!!) check it out!!! Quote
Guest snoosnoo Posted April 9, 2003 Posted April 9, 2003 danvapid, I don't want to get into an argument about what's good and what's not, so I'll refrain. I should have said there's disappointing/mediocre releases coming out these days, rather than "horrible crap." The reason I can say "disappointing releases" is because people like me who've been following psy for a long time know that these days it's all about quantity, not quality (to say the least). As for your reasoning on why lables are "struggling financially", I recommend you do your homework. It's quite the opposite of what you say. Labels that have sunk or are about to, have made the mistake of releasing whatever, dreaming about big money in a genre where that is not too likely. Because of their poor releases, people have stopped buying and they will download rather than pay for an album that they want but don't find worth spending their cash on. This cycle is killing the music, but we don't need to get into all that. There are certain labels out there and certain artists out there who know the importance of maintaining a high standard, which is why they take their time and give the people what they deserve (labels such as Ambivalent, Timecode, Alchemy, Ultimae, Dakini etc.... Artist such as Parasense, Hux Flux and even Dark Nebula etc). For reasons like that psy still has a faithful following, but a lot of people have given up and gone looking elsewhere since the music's been steadily going downhill.... PK, you're right, I should have said something more than "dark, fast, rough and makes you want to do a bunch of acid." Indeed I was far from being clear on the technical aspects. I simply stated what the music sounds like cause I was so excited about just having received it and I figured what I said would be enough to appeal to a certain kind of psy listener to make him.... her go check it out, like krize said, at Saikosounds. Guest danvapid Posted April 9, 2003 Posted April 9, 2003 exactly my point snoosnoo - demand does not meet supply: labels are carelessly signing too many artists and releasing too much mediocre stuff, and re-releasing certain tracks on several formats (ep's, comps, albums), rather than carefully compiling albums that are killer from start to finish with unique tracks...too many comps and albums nowadays are watered down with mediocre tracks and this leads to an overabundance of music for sale....this does not mean, though, that there aren't still labels and artists out there who are doing it right - there's still so much quality music being released and psy is evolving faster than any other music genre out there...and i beg to differ...it has evolved in a positive direction...i got started around 98 listening to etnica, transwave, hallucinogen, infected mushroom, and while a few timeless classics still amaze me to this day, the goa sound on the whole sounds pretty weak to me now in comparison to what it's evolved into, including both the more progressive/minimal and full-on directions....i don't like your pessimistic attitude and the general pessimism in the scene now w/ all this factionalization and goa vs minimal wars...fuckin open your mind everybody, you're killing psytrance Quote
Guest snoosnoo Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 danvapid, I agree with most of what you say, but I will still differ in certain respects. Indeed, people who argue about minimal vs. full on need to grow up. As for my pessimism, I justify it by the fact that I see the scene dying out in a way, meaning it's losing its magic and it doesn't have to be so, but there's a sense of confusion when the music is over run with artists who really have nothing to say but release just for the sake of throwing their two cents in. And since that's the trend (and I don't think it will change anytime soon), I see the scene going in a negative direction whose eventual conclusion can only be a dead end (god, I hope not). If that happens, how do you think people are going to look back on the scene? heehee I'm going to stop now, I'm beginning to depress myself. But I hope you see my point. Quote
Guest danvapid Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 i see it snoosnoo....though i feel theres so much thats special about this music i harbor some pessimism too - like im worried about the growing egotism i'm seeing in the scene, as well as how psytrance as we know it can survive in a world increasingly premised on money, commercialism, and conformity...keep our heads up and our minds open and we can keep the right spirit alive though....sorry if i came across as an asshole, like anyone else i say impulsive things that i later might take back...peace! Guest snoosnoo Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 right on man. I agree a lot more with what you say, now that you've explained it more. An open mind is indeed essential, and everyone needs to remain conscious of that, even occasional cynics like me. Quote
Guest sam_i_am Posted April 23, 2003 Posted April 23, 2003 the album is very fucking good magical energy has a pretty funny sample at the start & the track is a bit ravey IMHO, but it worx & it is quite psychedelic. Excellent tweaked out synth. Dark Nectar is an absolute rocker!!! Have heard this@so many parties. Absolutely r0x the dancefloor. Crankin guitar riffs, thundering bassline, funny samples. I'm not gonna go through this track 4 track, I will just say that if you like night-time trance & I mean the harder, darker stuff - full on huge basslines that rumble along every 16th, bizarro synth sounds that kinda wash over u with a weird metallic & crunching feel, then check this album out. Cyber Cult is killer too all in all the labum r0x it is no holds barred thumpin psytrance so if u like the sounds of that, check it out dunno who 2 compare it to, maybe some sorta cross between Absolum & Kluster, with a dash of Sun Project to boot. c y'all Quote
