abasio
BOOM! It hits you just how great it is. For me this usually happens with, well just about every album. I buy it, I listen to it, I am generally unimpressed then I put it on the shelf. Months later I might try it again and suddenly it is great! How does it happen? Why didn't I hear the greatness before? Usually I think it is a question of mood, focus or the joint experience! I never liked Ishq - Orchid until I was sick with a fever, my then GF was out buying medicine for me & I was lying delerious in a darkened room with Orchid playing! I have never been so happy to be sick and now everytime I listen to the album I understand it in a way I never did before. Secede - Tryshasla was another album I bought tried and instantly thought was boring and uninspired, no matter how much I tried (I had heard good things). Then one day when in a more melancholic mood (bad things had happened) I gave it another sympathy spin and BOOM! It was the bomb. I absolutely loved it Rena Jones - Driftwood was just an average album for me until I took it down to Enoshima Island, sat out on the balcony of one of the bars, watched the sunset over Mount Fuji while reflecting off of the pacific ocean! It fit so well & its beauty just shone. I hated minimal for a while, I bought Planet BEN - Silver and thought what the fuck is this shit! Then when my brain was boxed in from some fun substances I could really explore the level of detail in it and it really opened the door for me to enjoy Minimal & Prog! In 2003 I bought VA - Wider Horizons, didn't like the remixes until just a few weeks ago when I got it out & played it back to back about 6 times. It was just amazing! Summer really makes that comp hit home nicely So what music have you initially disliked then grown to love? Do you remember a turning point or is it a special mood thing? I can add almost every ambient/prog/minimal album to the list. Some albums are still sitting on my shelf either ready to be understood or to remain relegated into the also rans! p(sy)ayam
this happens to me all the time too, but the most extreme turnovers for me were VA - Oxycanta: i didn't like it at all. i thought it was the most boring of ultimae catalog, and one night i couldn't sleep so i gave it a try. man, can't forget the experience (i was really stoned ) it was amazing! i just wanted to get up and fly! at the moment it's definitely one of my all time favorites and i play it all the time. it's my favorite album to sleep to. James Murray - Where Edges Meet: i was really disappointed with this specially after Hol Baumann and I Awake albums which i didn't like as much as other ultimae albums. i don't remember when exactly it hit me but now i think it's the best album from 08 for me all the beatless albums need some time to sink in, and when it comes to dark ambient they need the right time

RTP
Shiva Chandra was the most remarkable of those cases for me... I never understood what to find in this monotonous, melody-lacking sound of his (apart from his first album they're all in this style). Never knew what to make of it, filed it under "utter crap". Until I was running to it one day ... half-heartedly I had recorded one of his tunes on MD (Schaukelstuhl) and, well, once I played it. Boy, I was awestruck! The pace was precisely suitable for my speed ... and suddenly it all made sense. This sound had no meaning, no hidden message, no emotion, no tangible expression, it just was rhythm and strange sounds ... and awesomeness! I can't describe how I mentally got it, but since that experience it's like somebody flipped a switch and I'm a total sucker for this stuff

I was feeling exactly like you: checked some samples and the then ordered the comp. Gave it a spin but it was so boring I was trying to re-sell but didn't work. So one day when I was very stoned I gave it a try (I wanted somethign very calm that I was able to listen and go to sleep) and boom, I just loved it! CosmoNaughty
It is a strange old it's like when you listen to old compilations and the tracks you loved at the time of them coming out don't sound so great but then there's always a track you didn't rate originally that you have a new found appreciation for. RAH
Boards Of Canada-Music Has The Right To Children uff, I couln't agree less there. Maybe i'm just always in the mood to hear that album. I'd probably mark "geodaddi" as more of a mood album from them, but that's totally personal. In my part, moody stuff in that respect... probably anything by Helios, Kettel (as it was mentioned before), legiac, Porn Sword Tobacco (I've very rarely found myself wanting to hear anything in that order that is not, Stress Assassin) and Near the Parenthesis, which sometimes goes down well and some others it doesn't. Bahamut
constance demby - novus magnificat new age/space music/classical... when it finally struck me I had one of the most amazing and unforgettable experiences.... it was the most beautiful thing ever.....I was overwhelmed and got a sort of spiritual orgasm (it sounds hippie but there's no better way to describe it) still something I can only listen to and really enjoy once in half a year or so
sektor101
Koxbox - Forever After Don't know if it was affected by mood (it was long ago), but when I first heard it, it was nothing special really and far too complex. About 2 months later when I remembered I had it, I thought I should give it another listen. Well, to this day, that album is getting better every time I listen to it. It's actually my number 1 album of all time.
Padmapani
Filteria - Sky Input when it came out i thought it was horrible and i didn't like filteria at all until i heard the samples for daze of our lives. i got daze, liked it very much and started to appreciate sky input. after seeing him live, i'm in love with all three albums. Doof - Lets Turn On (especially double dragons) i found the whole album boring and nothing special (double dragons even more boring than the rest). but one night while chilling, double dragons came on and i thought: wow that track is pure genius, how could i not have noticed that until now! Pleiadians - IFO at first it was quite boring, but it still slowly gets better with every listen and now i would rate it as one of the best albums (after D5 of course ). psytimeofmylife
Well, one of the last i got, and the first that comes to my mind: Pan Electric & Ishq - About Time The first time I listened to this album, I was bitterly disappointed. The tracks seemed nothing special, the flow of the albums was basically non-existent for me at that time. Then I left it on the shelf for a week or so... Then I checked it again. Huge difference! The first track became one of my favourites and after a few more listeners the others also (Everchange was the reason I got it in the first place). And now about the flow of the whole album, as diverse as it is, it still seems to magically balance itself out perfectly. Funny how things work out. Go-Goa Trancer
So far there have been 3 albums that I had trouble with. The first was Astral Projection - Trust In Trance. The only tracks I liked were Black & White and People Can Fly. I think I didn't get it because of the very repetitive bassline I focused on. Some day (was something like 6 months after hearing it for the first time), bam! Everything was clear, and delightful. Well, except for Aurora Borealis that I still don't like. Second was Total Eclipse - Violent Relaxation CD1. While I instantly fell in love with Delta Aquarids, I just couldn't stand the very agressive riffs of this one. Except for The Furnace which was an instant love. It took me like a year to finally "get it". Still have problems with Teknophobia. And the last and most difficult one... Dimension 5 - Transdimensional. I was reading all the praises as "one of the masterpieces of Goa" and I was thinking I was going to get mad for not liking it. I understand now that what I disliked were the "trancey" elements which disturbed me from getting the overall structures of the tracks. I will remember it my whole life, 2 days after christmas I said I'd give it another shot (after 2 years). Upon hearing Omega Centaurus... wow... it was a marvelous feeling. I still don't really like all the tracks, but I do get now why people praised it so much. Album I still don't like is Filteria - Sky Input. I can't really connect to all the praises. Yard Hippie
CBL's 'World of Sleepers' caught me out earlier today. I bought this one a long time ago and instantly decided it was okay, but not great... Cue one crazy weekend and a long, sleep-deprived journey home and suddenly no longer is that the case. As for whether this will be a lasting clicky moment I guess I can't yet say. I remember clearly the first time X-Dream's 'Radio' made sense to me (my god how was I not in utter awe) and FSOL's 'Lifeforms' which was a very, very sudden click brought on through listening through good speakers instead of headphones in pitch black darkness. That was one of those 'woah' moments definately. I'm with Exotic on 'Movements' I can see the genius technicality it must have taken and can feel that those beats should be driving deep deep inside of me but it's just not gotten there yet. It took a while for Extended and Leaving Home to properly do things for me though so I suppose it's a sleeper
