And if so, what subgenres does Techno, Acid, Gabber, House, Ambient and Trance have? Someone who know or can give me an URL where it's all explained? Thanks! Acid House concieved somewhere in the end of 80's in UK. Trance started by acts like Hardfloor and Sven Vath in the beginning of 90's. First Goa Records started to be released in 93/94. AFAIC Goa=Psychedelic, so we might start to celebrate the first 10 year anniversary of Psy Trance. Gabber? House began at Loft,Warehouse,etc (there the name was given). In the same time at Detroit they began to experiment with sci-fi sounds and techno was born ... Guest spacemonkey Posted April 24, 2003 Share Posted April 24, 2003 gabber would definatly fitt techno, if you would listen to records that are defined as oldstyle in that genre your listening to techno. gabber subgenre's where 5 years back something like: oldstyle hardcore terror newstyle, and then hardstyle came which has become a genre in itself now. Otto Matta Posted April 25, 2003 Share Posted April 25, 2003 I generally feel that trance is a branch in the evolution of techno, which means it's a subgenre of techno. But with that logic, I suppose techno, and therefore trance, are both branches in the evolution of Detroit/Chicago house. Ambient, as Bahamut correctly states, gained popularity in the 70s, but has evolved into all sorts of crazy subgenres like IDM, space and probably most if not all of the new age genre. Some more danceable ambient (IDM, electro, etc.) has gotten so far away from the original ambient that, I think, we needed the term "electronica" to describe it. It seems that although house and ambient have evolved separately, they have, within the past couple of decades, begun to blend with each other. Psy-ambient is a great example of this. Then I suppose everything electronic in music has its origin from Techno. Then all other modern genres are just subgenres to Techno... Sweet jes.. Guest spacemonkey Posted April 25, 2003 Share Posted April 25, 2003 good idea because the subgenres will only be used by people listening to that style and as you probably have seen on this forum many times, even they can't agree. this will apply to all genres and subgenres and therefore it's a mission impossible. if you stick to the basics and will explain a bit that's probably your safest choice. Also, if you want to take the genres back a little farther, house evolved from disco and funk, and the art of deejaying has its roots in reggae. Interesting. Pretty interesting and still unheard of. Definitely not jazzy and sofisticated pretentious intelligent jungle. Unintelligent techno can also be pretty interesting. Slam bam donk klonk slam bam donk klonk slam bam donk klonk slam bank donk klonk. There you go, 16 bars of unintelligent techno... I guess BotfB can be categorised under unintelligent trance. That's what EDM is all about. ;P Everyone uses the genre names a little differently, and the meanings of terms tend to change a lot by time. Perhaps one had better concentrate on the music, and use the terms only when the conversation demands this. Maybe invent new ones if the "official" ones don't seem to be the ones for you;) Remember, names are names and music is another thing.
