Looking for more stuff in this superb genre. So far I have...

Steve Roach (The Master!)

Tetsu Inoue (atleast his album "Ambiant Otaku")

Micro Cosmic & Daevid Allen (Rather obscure, but deserves to be mentioned)

Maybe try Space - Space

That was a side project of Jim Couty of The KLF.

Back in a day he and Alex Paterson teamed up to form this project, but according to some

Alex was afraid this will overshadow The Orb which was the other project he was about to start so he left and Jim stripped all of his contribution and released it as a solo album.

While a lot of Steve Roach music sounds 'spacy' and some of his tracks are the perfect 'floating through the stars' music, I don't think that much of his music is actually about space. There are often more earthly themes... it's spiritual, about the deeper meaning of life, being close to nature, in touch with our ancestors and stuff like that... or purely for meditation.

Even the Magnificent Void is not necessarily about space, but it's definately very suitable for it.

But isn't there a highly spiritual/oneness/transcendental aspect to gazing out in space?

True.

Those who like the amazing Michael Stearns - Planetary Unfolding, check out the artist Telomere (not as great but still nice).

It's too bad Michael Stearns doesn't release much. He's more into soundtracks for documentaries and stuff. But I read that he'll be releasing music that was made for planetariums next year, so there could finally be more space music from him coming up. He's also going to do the soundtrack for the follow up of Baraka.

I hate most of this space ambient. I would hesitate to call it music because most of it is just a bunch of random tinkering noises filling up time.

All music is just random noises :)

Most if it is arranged in intelligent patterns that pleases the mind, rather than random.

There is no randomness in random :)

I'd say Benn Jordan's album, Pale Blue Dot - A Tribute To Carl Sagan is my #1... or at least in the top 3.

Distant System's Spiral Empire is probably my favorite.

The Martian's LBH-6251876 compilation is awesome Detroit space techno

I like Delerium's Spheres 1 & 2 also.

There obviously is branching when you refer to space ambient.

First one - a more or less traditional ambient (Steve Roach or Vir Unis, for example).

Second - on the new age/melodic/atmospheric side - Proton Kinoun, Gulan, Telomere, Alpha Wave Movement, etc.

Third - the Dark Ambient division - Ionosphere - The Stellar Winds and the likes.

So, depending on what particularly you're looking for, the answer may vary.

P.S. Listening to Mystical Sun - Primordial Atmospheres album right now. And it's pretty spacey, which would fit one's needs depending on the definition. Recent album from Cell might qualify as well, in certain sense.
