I never not feel moved when I hear David Gilmour's guitar intro on Shine On You Crazy Diamond. You can immediately recognize his sound, he knows exactly which chord to strike, both musically and emotionally. I'm a huge fan. :) I think I wouldn't be able to pick just a few songs in order show his extreme awesomeness, but then again, it doesn't really matter, cause all of his solos are amazing. Sorry to come across as a silly fanboy, but I think most Floyd fans (and others) would agree that he's in a league of his own.

So, what are your guitar heroes, and what are your favorite parts? Maybe if I get more bored during the rest of the day, I'll post some videos of Jimi Hendrix as well.

The guitar solo in Time (quality not that good, but you'll catch my drift ;) )

It's interesting to me how we're all wired to like (and dislike) different things. I find both Gilmour's and Hendrix's guitar sounds similarly abrasive and unlikeable. My counter would be Knopfler, who in my opinion has a warmer, earthier, understated tone - probably because he uses his fingers instead of a pick - and is capable of more elegance, and subtlety with melody and harmony. But that's just opinion.

Well, Mark Knopfler is no doubt a great guitar player, but I just really don't like the Dire Straits, so I can dig the solos, but most of that music is wasted on me.

Let me say just this: why say that other people play 'whiney guitar solos'? Fine if you don't like it, but I prefer seeing a big topic with excellent guitar solos rather than a 'my hero is cooler than yours'.

That being said, I checked out Joe Sartiani, man that dude has serious skills. Heavy rockguitar playing, very impressing. That Andy McKee sure knows how to touch them strings too, by the way. Nice one, guys! :)

nah just exaggerating, I like some of it... but for me some of the above solos lack any kind of subtlety...it's like a continuous loud stream of notes that doesn't do much to me

the guy on the accoustic is great

All the above are exceptional guitarists in their own right.

As a big fan of Fleetwood Mac I have to mention Lindsey Buckingham. Here is an acoustic rendition of Big Love played live. I couldn't find the track from the album The Dance on Youtube which is even better.

Another hero is Junior Marvin from the Wailers(Al Anderson is also a very good one offcourse)

One of the best live albums ever imo
