state of psy vinyl...?

hi

what has happened with the vinyl releases in psy? i have just returned to psy, and it would be great to get some vinyl to mix with my other styles. i managed to get a copy of Aero, Ice-O-Later, and some other good ones, but they get scarce fast. plus, the sound quality on an LP is inferior to a single release :( i know many places are using CD decks, and i own one myself, but i just don't like them for technical reasons.

has downloading killed the vinyl scene in psy? i've noticed that, in addition to quantities being limited, the packaging on LPs is pretty flimsy. it seems like there's very little money around to invest in pressing wax...

when did this all happen? during the past 1 or 2 years? why hasn't it affected other underground scenes (i also spin UK acid techno, hard techno, and freeform hardcore) in the same way?

Psy vinyl is dying because it's too expensive to produce. When you figure a CD pressing literally costs a buck or two (if that), vinyl sure doesn't stand up to the economics these days for most small/underground labels. Most decent new stuff isn't being pressed onto wax, but there are still some labels like BooM! and Ektoplazm (just to name a few) still putting out quality.

I don't think it's completely fair to say that downloading has killed it. I download, but I also buy copius amounts of psy on vinyl. The psy market is pretty small and sales are down except for monsters labels like TIP World. Personally, I think it has a lot to do with the quality. The market is pretty saturated with releases, but there's also a lot of filler being released these days. After 15+ releases that all sound the same in 2 years, people have had their fill of the atomic pulse/alien project/blah blah sound.

I personally prefer the sound of vinyl, but I am going to have to cave and buy a CD deck just so I can play some of the good CD only stuff. There's a lot of great cross-over potential with this music, just look at (please don't kill me for saying this) Paul Oakenfold, John '00' Flemming, etc. A lot psyfreaks prefer to stay exclusive to just psy; keep the music underground. But to be fair, I don't hear many non-psy djs spin psy either. As much as I don't like their new music, GMS has done a lot to promote psy to new audiences, something this genre needs to work on in order to survive in the future.

here in brasil there's a 11 years old KID wich is a psy DJ(playing with the cdjs)....its really sad to so a children in the middle of all those drugged crazy people....someone should go to jail for this...

someone really thinks that a 11 years old kid listen to electronic music and works as a DJ? damn...at this age i was playing with my skate , playing soccer at the street and with my he-man and gi-joe stuff

up untill recently i was spinning Vinyl but now spin CD.

psy releases seem to come out more so with a lot of Albums and Compilations, there for 12" singles arent that popular and the quality of multiple tracks on wax is low.

i find the majority of stuff that seems to still be released on vinyl is the proggy and tech stuff. most full power is on cd.

razael - what makes you say that mixing on cd's is not "real" and too easy? i too prefer vinyl, but im using cd's because thats where the music I LIKE is released.

mixing on CDs isn't bad, and the sound quality is nice, but it's harder without seeing the surface of the vinyl. i know high-end CD decks like the Pioneer 1000 give you a waveform, but i'm not spending that much money.

i hate to say it, but i have enjoyed mixing MP3s with Traktor DJ lately. i encode my CDs and vinyl at high bitrates, and then use Traktor. very easy to drop a track, and you get a full waveform to help with mixing well. i only have one soundcard, so i'm using the PC like another deck, and i've connected it to a spare channel on my mixer. so now i have 3 turntables, a CD deck, and Traktor all running into my mixer :) :) eventually, i will have two soundcards in the PC, and i will run both outputs to my mixer so that i can use Traktor for all my music (i have this dream of being able to bring a laptop with my ripped vinyl anywhere i go, so i can mix all the time... i think i can use a USB soundcard for the second output...? :)

if digital is the only alternative, and i can't afford the Pioneer 1000s, then i think i prefer Traktor DJ over CDs. you just need to rip your music at really high rates, like 256 or 320.

one problem i have lately is the sound quality on the psy vinyl that i can find. i just got Ice-O-Later, and a few tunes seem to have one channel louder than the other. and my Fractal Glider album sounds very weak. i wish i could find singles...
