GagaISM
We all know the drill. An album gets trashed upon it's release only to be praised as a classic years later or vise versa. Koxbox's Dragon Tales is a prime example. It could be the other way around as well. An album that once was a favorite and now no longer holds it's magic. So my question is as following - what albums have you changed your mind about for better or for worse and why?

GagaISM
Etnica - Equator ==> Sounds better now. Any theories as to why it's sounding better now? Astral Projection's Another World has become my favorite AP album. I love the variation and the melodies are just top notch. I used to think that TIT was much better, but I rarely listen to that anymore.

Still think TIT is an amazing album as was Astral Files but nothing has ever beaten Dancing Galaxy as far as Astral Projection goes. Can't really think of an album off the top of me head, but Lochi - London Acid City.. used to hate it in 1996 because Rampling played it every week for about 6 or 7 weeks on Radio 1 and all I wanted to hear was the Goa / Psy stuff not acid. However, I would now call it one of me fav acid trance tunes ever.

Don't know what Danny Rampling has to do with anything, but... "London Acid City! London Acid City! London Acid City! Our Time Is Now!" As far as albums go, for me it's Process - One Drop Or Two. There was a time when I was naive enough to think how a lack of proper, obvious melodic structures in psy trance implied a lack of talent, laziness if you will. Damn, was I wrong... Funny that you mention Process. I had a much easier time getting into his second album Superior Technology. I'm still puzzled why though, since I ain't much of a melody-man. I was already drooling allover XV KILIST and Shiva Chandra at that point. Something just kept me from getting into it. Might have had something to do with the over-funky basslines. Atmos third album Tour De Trance took me a great while to warm up to. The ultra cheesy melodies and vocal parts were tough to swallow, but once I got over my elitist mentality I just couldn't get enough. It's not Headcleaner, but that's exactly the point. Balicki just wanted to create some super catchy feel-good tunes and he did that with great success. Everything about the album is top notch. Walkabout
As far as albums go, for me it's Process - One Drop Or Two. There was a time when I was naive enough to think how a lack of proper, obvious melodic structures in psy trance implied a lack of talent, laziness if you will. Damn, was I wrong... Oh yes. As a teenager I thought ODOT was good but nothing special, and then at a party a couple of years later I heard "Psychobabble" and I couldn't believe what I was dancing to. I had a similar experience with Double Dragon's album. Also Saiko Pod - Phutures And Options. I thought this was a complete betrayal when I first heard it, but now I can appreciate their attempt to make a new kind of psychedelic dance music. It's still a pretty unique album. I used to read Wax magazine religiously. This led me to believe that Johann - Blow Your Mind was awful awful awful and Quirk - Machina Electrica And Fornax Chemica was a work of misunderstood genius. Now I think Johann is good fun while I find Quirk (apart from a couple of tracks) distinctly unmemorable. Anyway, later I started reading Dream Creation and got on the road to recovery. Lemmiwinks
hmm well as a general rule psytrance ages very badly, there are TONS of albums I cherished in the past but don't think much of today: Etnica, Pleiadians, MWNN and even the high and mighty Astral Projection... well I guess that an album will become old after you've listened to it a million times no matter how good lol. Still, if I'd have to pick one substyle that I totally dissed when it first came out only to regret it became extinct today it would be techtrance... I bought it at the time an did not like it, but after reading here all good things about it, I just played it back and really enjoyed it. I guess, for me, the right moment for that album was not when it was released, but now.
GagaISM
What Double Dragon album are you talking about? Contrinuum or Transparent?
CoLoUr DoTZ
Well, actually "Continuum". I didn´t know the guy released a second album, I did not follow him after not being really impressed by first one at the time. I will for sure check more of his discography.... In my experience the hypermelodic goa trance artists you mentioned give diminishing returns. I love Etnica and MWNN but it's easy to become overfamiliar with their music; I have to step away from them for a while and come back in a few months or years. I regret not appreciating 'alternative' psy labels e.g. Psy-Harmonics in their heyday and buying more of their albums. That's music with real staying power. What Double Dragon album are you talking about? Continuum or Transparent? Sorry, I was talking about Continuum.
GagaISM
Sorry, I was talking about Continuum. First time I've heard something sounded remotely like Process. Gotta get this album asap. I regret not appreciating 'alternative' psy labels e.g. Psy-Harmonics in their heyday and buying more of their albums. That's music with real staying power. I bought Lumukanda's Araglin years ago, but never got the chance to listen the rest of their catalogue. What are your personal Psy-Harmonics faves? I didn't like Pound System all that much, but everything else I've heard from the label is gold. Psy-Harmonics Volume 5 is a TRIP, and it took several listens before I could really get into it; a lot of the tracks sound like psychedelic garage rock done with psytrance synths. About as far from conventional dance music as you could get.
GagaISM
Thanks! Any other unconventional labels from that period worth checking out? As for the original topic I think I'll add Growling Mad Scientists. I used to dig them a lot. Especially The Growly Family on TIP. But these days I just can't get into them like I used to. The bass lines are all the same and the productions sound a little bit flat to me. I'll give them another listen today and see what happens. Qube, Elejam, Equinox, Anoyo, Edgecore, Exogenic, Devic Craft Cordings, Weird Music Society, Surreal Audio, Thirteen Productions and Demon Tea. Koyote had some unusual releases as well towards the end of their life.

Koyote had some unusual releases as well towards the end of their life. Lot's of Japanese and Aussie stuff. Two scenes I have very limited knowledge about. I'd like to know my Koxboxes and Pleiadians of those scenes. Could you write me a little list with the highest regarded artists/labels or link me to a site with some info? That would be GREAT. Japanese psy is not strong in my collection (I'd sure like it to be!). But some important names there are Uni, Ubar Tmar (probably the closest to a Japanese Koxbox), Aoa, Ree.K and Masa. In the Australian scene the biggest names I'm aware of are Ray Castle, Ollie Olsen and Nick Taylor. Here's an interview with Ollie from back in the 1990s. GagaISM
Ubar Tmar's True album is absolutely mindblowing! Listening to it right now. You wouldn't consider KURO essential?
Walkabout
You wouldn't consider KURO essential? Oh god damn it. Yes I would; everyone from the Tokyo Techno Tribe era is awesome. "Revolution" has been on my want list forever.
Walkabout
BTW, Masa apparently made a porn record. http://www.discogs.com/Enemagic-Sound-Orchestra-Enemagic-Sound-Tracks/release/2564253
GagaISM
Incredible quantities of good stuff out there. It's crazy. I can't believe those who bitch and moan about the current state of the scene. All you have to do is to dig a little deeper and you'll be graced with another shiny diamond. Obviously. JonCrow
so little time.... So little money......... Thanks so much for some of the info in this thread, particularly you Walkabout, and GagalSM for your spirit of inquisition, you may have successfully carved a fresh tangent in the future pathways that my ear-drums and nervous systems will vibrate to. I had some of these on my radar for awhile but have been lazy to look into them. My bank (out-of-)balance says fuck-you!
