A lot of the Thunderdome releases sound kinda cheesy today, but the ISR releases are still killing it. A lot less commercial sounding than the typical Dutch stuff. I also ventured a little deeper into the underground listening to labels like Deathchant, Rebelscum and Bloody Fist. I love Delta 9, Nasenbluten, Hellfish and The DJ Producer, but my all time favorite Hardcore CD's remain Manu Le Malin's Biomechanik part 1 & 2. Such a unique style of mixing and sound. He really transcended the clichés of Hardcore Techno back in the day. So I'm wondering if anyone knows a good forum where I could gain more knowledge about this genre? Lemmiwinks Posted November 6, 2011 Share Posted November 6, 2011 yeah this stuff was VERY popular in these parts in the mid/ late 90s and was pretty much the most widely available "underground" electronic music so most teens who wanted to go against the crowd were into it. OK, looking in retrospective, a whole lot of it was a marketing scam cause like 90% of the tracks weren't nearly as dark and brutal as they were presented (thinking especially of the Thunderdome comps) Still, some stuff were pretty darn good and I still like listening to them from time to time. He really managed to transcend the stagnant and formulaic style of the Dutch scene. Together with Deathchant, Rebelscum, Bloody Fist and ISR. The heydays of this label lay far behind us, yet the label still releases and keeps on focussing on their specific style. Lenny Dee was a visionary, too bad his own vision got degenrated and drowned by a bunch of misunderstanding quasi-musicians, exposing us to the abominable derivatives of once flourishing hardcore sounds, as we unfortunately had to witness during the nineties. However, to keep things positive, my own pick out of their extensive release roster must be Zenith's epochal Flowers Of Intelligence and his dreamy hardcore trancer A Tear In Heart, as well as Manu Le Malin's "Memory EP" (perhaps the label's high point?), along with one of two Koenig Cylinders vinyls (does anyone spot that's where John Selway's career kicked off way before he took the techno world by surprise with his studio partner Christian Smith?) The Mescalinum United We Have Arrived tune is one of the finest pieces in my collection. Both the original and the AFX reworks are foundation stones for the whole hardcore-hard techno-industrial techno sound which would later further fully develop.... What a crazy, wip ass monster tune! This 'Biomechanik' sounds quite nice, avoids the sillyness and superficial approach a lot of hardcore I've heard is like. Yes I know Chris McCormack isn't hardcore but it was somewhat similar to Biomechanik in its mood; something in my brain connected these two and that made me post the link. Yes yes, you're right... That's the point of this thread. The good ol' "when hardcore was cool" rant. The old IST records sound like that because they are old, and like a lot of electronic music, remain confined within a certain time frame, attitude and vision of the party scene (a lot of large, dragon like decorations at parties, skulls, and other stuff reminiscent more of the metal scene than the rave mentality) and tickle certain emotions and memories in the hearts of a lot of the older ones. Same thing will happen with mr. Maassen's music, in a while, which by the way isn't hard techno.
