CyclotronMajesty
I would like to start out a studio. What hardware / software is good for high quality sound? I suspect logic audio would be essential. (I have a mac) I have a yamaha ypg 225 keyboard. (I think it's a toy). Any suggestions for a good synth? Also what is a sampler? And what is a drum machine? How do you actually MAKE or edit sounds? How do artists make it all fit the beat? Does MIDI do that? I'd like to be able to make Goa, or Psy. Well basically a computer with a good dedicated soundcard and a pair of monitors are all you'll need to get started. After all, such big-stage names as Swedish House Mafia, Avicii and Deadmau5 became famous using nothing more than a computer and a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation - like Logic Audio you've mentioned) so if they made it, why not you? ALL good synths are available as plugins (software version that "plug in" virtually into your DAW), so no need investing a lot of money into hardware when you're not sure if you will ever make it past the hobby stage. Also know that even though each software has its own group of dedicated fans and critics, they all do basically the same thing, it is just a question of learning to use it properly. Midi is simply a standard "language" that allows electronic different music instruments to "communicate" with eachother, but again, if everything is in your computer you won't really need it, except if you want to hook up your keyboard (any keyboard will do since the sound-making part will be in your computer). How do you actually MAKE or edit sounds? How do artists make it all fit the beat? youtube is your friend Just type in "psytrance tutorial" and pick it up from there... fiddle around a bit and see if this is for you or if you'd rather do something else with your life lol
Veracohr
How do you actually MAKE or edit sounds? How do artists make it all fit the beat? Does MIDI do that? I'd suggest getting a simple software synth and starting with preset sounds, then play with the controls to start learning. Over time as you get the hang of it you'll figure out how to make the sounds you want from scratch. MIDI sequencing records the note and control data you play. You can also usually enter data manually with a mouse. You can then move the data around, edit it in various ways to fit it to your beat and rhythm. CyclotronMajesty
Cool. Good idea. I think it would be fun to mess around with some stuff. I'm not surprised it's pretty much self taught. Actually I made a track before... it was a sort of drum and bass track. Made it on logic using just recording my sounds from the synth into the computer... I don't think it had MIDI. I already know how to make a bit of music just playing the keyboard, what has intimated me is the technical abilities of recording and all. Veracohr
It's not always self taught, there are formal trainings and step-by-step video tutorials on MIDI sequencing and sound synthesis and all of that. Sometimes I forget, but even I learned MIDI formally, whereas I learned synthesis on my own. I just think it's a good idea to jump into it, then ask specific questions in places like this when you need help. I also recommend user manuals. Some people prefer to fumble around a piece of software without referring to the manual. I don't get that.
Panoptes
get a daw and an interface. Get a simple synth. learn the basics. Decide what you need from there....
needle ninja
Be prepared to invest $10-20 thousand dollars on a good studio setup. There are better forums then here to ask what to get.
